Girls Take To Mat In Mayville

MAYVILLE — Warsaw’s Hailey DeGroff was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 145-pound weight class at the inaugural Chautauqua Lake Girls Kickoff Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Keshequa’s Alivia Cartwright won the 118-pound weight class wiht a 9-6 decision over Lake Shore’s Alexiya Thuman.

Warsaw’s Gracie Hostetler beat Cheektowaga’s Alexis Creek 16-7 to earn a major decision in the 132-pound final.

DeGroff pinned Chautauqua Lake’s Mia Smith in 35 seconds to captured the 145-pound title.

West Seneca West’s Christian Evans pinned Chautauqua Lake’s Rylee Buxton in 1:09 to claim the 160-pound weight class.

Canandaigua’s Sofia Pollack pinned Cheektowaga’s Jocelyn Munoz in 17 seconds to take the 189-pound title.

CAPTURES TITLE

BERGEN — Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer finished with 170.5 points to take first place at the 26th annual Triple-O Mechanical Byron-Bergen Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Jordan Joslyn was the Thunderbirds’ lone individual winner, capturing the 118-pound title with a 17-2 technical fall over Perry’s Holden Kelly.

Bradley Smith took second at 145 pounds for CL/W/P/C, suffering a pin in 1:53 to Albion’s Ellwood Hafner.

Ison Shirley was second at 215 pounds after losing 6-5 to Albion’s Dayne Aina.

Gavin Burchanowski took third at 102 pounds, pinning Medina’s Reese Senske in 58 seconds.

Jack Bourgeois was third at 132 pounds with a 2-0 decision over East Irondequoit Eastridge’s Remy O’Keefe.

Trent Burchanowski was third at 138 pounds after beating Pioneer’s Brandon Doyle 5-2.

Gavin Segovia was third at 215 pounds with a pin in 2:45 over Lyndonville’s Sam Doolan.

Martin Ohlsson (126 pounds) and John Watson (160 pounds) were fourth for the Thunderbirds.

HILLBILLIES TAKE FOURTH

HAMBURG — Fredonia/Silver Creek finished fourth out of nine teams at the 16th annual Queen City Foods Southtowns Duals on Friday and Saturday.

The Hillbillies beat St. Francis 34-30, St. Mary’s of Lancaster 36-29, Eden 51-23, East Aurora/Holland 47-15 and Salamanca 54-8.

“We haven’t been there in a while. They changed the date. We used to go to Webster, but they got us this year,” Fredonia/Silver Creek head coach Joe Santilli said. “It was a well-run tournament. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. Everybody followed the protocols put in place.”

Lucas Hoffman made the all-tournament team at 118 pounds with a 7-1 record while first-year wrestler Jacob Szumigala also made the all-tournament team at 215 pounds with a 5-1 record.

“We are super-inexperienced with five first-time wrestlers in the lineup,” Santilli said. “Three kids who would’ve been returning aren’t wrestling this year.”

Dawson Russo went 6-2 at 172 pounds. Sebastian Puglisi (138 pounds), Dalton Wolcott (145 pounds) and Jacob Myers (152 pounds) each went 5-3. Cameron Ingram (126 pounds) and Dom Collazo (285 pounds) both went 4-4.

“I believe we overachieved a little bit because of really great efforts and really great attitudes,” Santilli said. “I’m looking forward to how we’ll progress throughout the season.”

GOLDEN COUGARS ARE SECOND

CICERO — Falconer/Cassadaga Valley placed second out of 21 teams at the Bill Andersen Memorial Wrestling Tournament hosted by Cicero-North Syracuse High School this weekend.

Austin Chase went 3-0 and won the 138-pound championship with a pin of Marcellus-Onondaga’s Christopher Doshna in 4:40.

Dylan Newman finished second at 102 pounds after West Genesee’s Austin Fesinger pinned him in the final.

Karsen DePasquale also took second at 132 pounds after getting pinned by Canastota’s Culley Bellino in the final.

Karsen Lundgren took fourth at 110 pounds after Fairport’s Trey LeChase pinned him in the consolation final.

Jacob Clark was 4-1 at 145 pounds to take fourth place after a forfeit while Dalton Caldwell was fourth at 152 pounds, losing a 4-3 decision to Baldwinsville’s Max Naples in the consolation final.

Anthony Rivera (118 pounds), Brodie Little (160 pounds) and David Stein (285 pounds) all took sixth place.
