ORCHARD PARK — The names and jersey numbers of the Jamestown High School football players who have earned first-team all-state honors through the years are displayed on the back of the grandstand that overlooks the parking lot at Strider Field on the city’s south side.

There are 26 Red Raider alumni in that select fraternity.

Head coach Tom Langworthy might ultimately have to make room for one more.

Continuing one of the best seasons in the history of the program, senior running back Jaylen Butera rushed for 220 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns, and senior teammate Ben Anderson added a rushing and receiving TD to lead the Red Raiders to a 41-0 victory over Frontier in the Section VI Class A championship game at Highmark Stadium on Friday night.

The win vaults Jamestown (11-0) into the Far West Regional next Friday at Strider Field against Canandaigua, which defeated University Prep, 16-14, last night in the Section V title contest.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” Langworthy said. “They put in a lot of time, effort and energy into this. We felt this was our time.”

It was hard to argue with that.

Behind a stout effort by the offensive line, Butera scored on runs of 22, 1 and 4 yards; Anderson found the end zone on a 40-yard reception from junior quarterback Trey Drake and on a 39-yard run; and the defense held the Falcons (8-3) and their triple-option offense out of the end zone, as Anderson (15 tackles) and junior Sean O’Brien (14 tackles) led the way.

“That’s a tough thing to stop,” Langworthy said of Frontier’s offensive scheme. “I thought we handled that well.”

It was that kind of night for the Red Raiders, who claimed their first sectional crown since 2014.

“We talked about it being a battle early and us having to play our game, the Jamestown way,” Langworthy said. ” … It was a battle early, but we were able to get that first touchdown and then kind of separated after that.

“I’m super proud to bring a championship back to Jamestown. Jamestown is now a city of champions again.”

It certainly was a different kind of game than the one played at Strider Field early in the season, one which Jamestown won, 20-14, thanks to a Drake-to-Butera touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

There was no such drama last night.

On Jamestown’s first possession, Butera carried the ball eight times, including a 22-yard TD run, to cap an 80-yard drive. Ella Propheter booted the first of her five extra-point tries, giving the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Six minutes later, Butera found the end zone again, this time from the 1. The 73-yard drive included 51 yards by Butera and another 17 from Anderson that pushed Jamestown’s lead to 14-0 with 4:26 left in the second quarter.

Eleven seconds later — courtesy of a Frontier fumble, the first of three turnovers — the Red Raiders found the end zone again when Drake connected with Anderson on a 40-yard touchdown pass to expand their lead to 21-0 with 4:15 left in the first half.

“That touchdown pass was really critical in the game,” Langworthy said.

The Falcons’ best scoring chance in the first half came in the waning moments, but Jamestown defensive back Sincere Green intercepted Jacob Bush’s fourth-down pass in the end zone and returned the pick to the Red Raiders’ 17. Drake took a knee to run out the clock and send Jamestown to a three-touchdown lead at the break.

The Red Raiders’ dominance continued in the second half, as Anderson scored on a 39-yard run, Butera found the end zone on a 4-yard burst and Radon Wright tallied on a 5-yard run. When the final seconds ticked off the clock, Langworthy received a ice-water bath from his team to celebrate the sectional crown.

Twenty minutes later, and with the rain pouring down, Langworthy walked slowly off the field. Upon reaching the end zone, he took a knee and bowed his head for a moment of silence. Upon getting to his feet, he pointed to the heavens.

The fact he was getting soaked for the second time was a perfect way for the longtime coach to end his night.

NOTES: Anderson finished with 92 yards rushing on nine carries and caught two passes for 60 yards. … Drake completed 6 of 7 passes for 103 yards. … Unofficially, Butera has rushed for 1,915 yards on the season and he has pushed his touchdown total to 38 as he closes in on Aaron Leeper’s school-record 47 set in 2000. … O’Brien was Jamestown’s Character Athlete of the Game. … Sean Paige had an interception. … Frontier’s Jack Novak had a team-high 89 yards on 17 carries. … Teammate Konrad Krzyszton was the Falcons’ Character Athlete of the Game.
