Southwestern Girls Upset Allegany-Limestone

ALLEGANY — Despite losing nine games this season, the Southwestern Trojans are the Section VI Class B2 champion until somebody beats them.

Head coach Derek Houser’s team played up to that title Friday.

Brynne Conley scored a pair of second-half goals from Ellie Lawton and No. 7 Southwestern beat No. 2 Allegany-Limestone 2-1 in quarterfinal action.

Next up for the Trojans is a 7:30 Tuesday semifinal matchup with No. 3 Royalton-Hartland, which beat No. 11 Newfane 4-0 on Friday.

“Our message has been to push forward,” Houser said. “Going into the playoffs, that’s still our sectional title. We’re not giving it to anybody. You are going to have to come and absolutely take it from us.”

The Gators got on the scoreboard first as Olivia Paterniti found the back of the net in the 28th minute.

“It was a pretty level first half,” Houser said. “We had a couple of pretty close calls. Brynne had a great look 10 minutes in and Ellie had a good look with six minutes left in the first half. It was back and forth.”

Conley tied the game in the ninth minute of the second half. After taking a pass from Lawton, the senior made a move and hit a shot that glanced off the post and into the net.

“That gave us the life we needed to get going,” Houser said.

In the 62nd minute, the Trojans played a ball down the line to Lawton, who sent a cross into the box.

“Their goalkeeper got caught trying to intercept the cross,” Houser said.

The ball got past the keeper and Conley put it home for the 2-1 lead.

Allegany-Limestone nearly tied the game with about six minutes left on a shot from 20 yards out, but Southwestern keeper Reece Beaver made one of her eight saves by diving to her right and knocking the ball out of bounds for a corner kick.

“Off the foot, I thought it might be in,” Houser said.

Royalton-Hartland is the next challenge for the Trojans. The Rams feature senior Kara Choate, who has 37 goals on the season after two more Friday afternoon.

“Roy-Hart has a girl that has more goals than we have as a team,” Houser said. “She’s a really dynamic player. We played them two years ago and lost in the quarterfinals 3-1. She’s fast.”
