Jacey Cappa was added to the mix last season after the graduation of Rachel Annis.

The foursome has built up quite a chemistry.

The Bears have back-to-back Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Central Division titles to show for it.

And Wednesday, head coach Scott Stone’s team added another achievement to its resume. The Bears shut out Chautauqua Lake to finish 10 for 10 in clean sheets against league opponents.

Nora Edwards and Tyra Clark each scored twice as the Bears blanked the Thunderbirds 8-0 to complete a perfect 10-0-0 Central Division slate.

In league games, the Bears (14-2-0, 10-0-0) outscored opponents 68-0, including a 1-0 forfeit victory over Silver Creek/Forestville last week.

“We’ve been working at that for years. We take defense very seriously. We score a ton of goals, but our defense is where it starts,” Stone said postgame. “For them to finish with no goals against in league play is a huge accomplishment. I’m extremely proud to be their coach. That’s not something that’s easy to do.”

Yost and Cappa have patrolled the middle of the field to near perfection throughout this season. Chitester and Kehrli have locked down the boundaries of the field.

“When you have that continuity back there, they just have a feel for where each other is going to be. They communicate, they talk, they listen. If one makes a mistake, there is one to clean it up,” Stone said. “They are always so well positioned. They do a great job of stopping chances before they are even created and limiting shots. When you do that, it’s hard for other teams to score.”

There was a moment of trepidation Wednesday with just over four minutes remaining in the first half when the Thunderbirds’ Emma Lindsey got free inside the 18-yard box. Rarely do the Bears allow a free look at the goal, but Lindsey got off a powerful shot that ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and landed in tight before it was cleared to safety.

“My stomach dropped for a minute. She got in there,” Stone said. “It’s still sports. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck on your side.”

Frewsburg was already ahead 3-0 at that time.

Raena Bird scored the first goal on a rebound of a Nora Edwards shot. Kaydan Bush then finished a Kendal Sohl corner kick to make it 2-0 and Clark got loose on a breakaway before scoring on her own rebound.

After Lindsey hit the crossbar, Alexandra Hultberg scored the Bears’ fourth goal when she played a short corner kick in to Taytum Jimerson, got the ball back and found the back of the net high toward the far post.

After halftime, Edwards scored a pair of goals while Makenna McBride set up a pair of goals, first to Sohl and then to Clark.

“In years past we relied on our defense a lot more,” Stone said. “We have scored over 90 goals this year, so when you are putting up those types of numbers, the ball is not in your defensive side a lot. … They just need to stay mentally prepared.”

Under pressure all day, eighth-grader Lucy Gates made 19 saves for Chautauqua Lake (6-4-2, 5-4-1).

Now Frewsburg waits for Saturday’s seeding meeting. Currently, the Bears look like they will be the No. 3 seed in the Section VI Class C playoffs.

“We’ll flip a switch. We know playoffs are different no matter how successful we’ve been in the regular season,” Stone said. “No matter who we play in the first round, those games are going to have a different feel to them.”

Last year, Frewsburg won Class C as the No. 2 seed when it beat Chautauqua Lake in the final.

“The good thing for us is we’ve won back-to-back champioships. We are experienced and we are going to lean on that experience,” Stone said. “We’ve played in those big games. We’ve been here before. … We’ve only knocked down a couple of goals. The real goals are still ahead of us.”
