Four Jayhawks Named All-Conference; Lund Is Top Coach

ROCHESTER — Ashley Lund made it known in August that she was intending to step down after 12 seasons as the volleyball coach at Jamestown Community College.

The Russell, Pennsylvania resident went out in style two months later.

At the conclusion of last weekend’s Western New York Athletic Conference tournament, Lund was named the WNYAC Coach of the Year for the eighth time, highlighting a season in which she surpassed 300 career victories.

Meanwhile, four of her players — freshman setter Madison Johnson (Panama/Panama Central), and freshman outside hitters Emma McCarthy (Olean/Allegany-Limestone Central), Maggie McClelland (Olean/Olean High School) and Megan Cotter (Jamestown/Southwestern High) — claimed all-conference honors.

Johnson had 491 assists on the season, averaging 7.67 per set, which was second best in the conference. She also had a career-high 45 assists in a five-set match against Monroe CC and eclipsed the 30-assist mark in five matches. Johnson tallied 57 digs, including a career-best 14 against Erie CC, and reached double-digit digs in six matches.

McCarthy led the team in kills with 188, which was fourth in the conference, and in kills per set with 2.61. McCarthy, who had nine matches with 10 kills or more, recorded her best performance in a five-set match against Monroe CC when she collected 21 kills. McCarthy was also a big contributor on the defensive end, leading the team in digs with 251 and digs per set with 3.49. She twice recorded a career-high 24 digs against Erie CC and collected 20 or more in three matches.

Cotter, who recorded 202 digs on the season (a 2.81 average per set), had a season-best 17 in a four-set match against Corning CC. On the offensive end, Cotter collected 132 kills, which was third on the team, highlighted by 15 against Erie CC. She had double-digit kills in four matches.

McClelland was third on the team in digs with 216 and averaged 3.00 digs per set. She had a career-best 20 digs in two matches and reached double figures in that category in 10 matches.
