Bears Top Lyons/Sodus

LYONS — Coming into the week the Frewsburg Bears 8-man football team were the ninth ranked team in the state and after Saturday’s 66-38 win over Lyons/Sodus they will likely move up.

The Bears were ready to play after their long 3 hour and 45 minute bus ride, starting with Zach Winters blocking and recovering the first Lyons/Sodus punt of the game.

Winters strong game continued after that as he rushed for 248 yards on 30 carries, with five touchdowns and three 2-point conversions. Winters is now up to 758 rushing yards through four games with 11 touchdowns.

“Our offensive line has been very good,” stated Frewsburg head coach Terry Gray. “They’re physical, you don’t have those kind of rushing stats without that offensive line.”

Frewsburg quarterback Draven DeJesus also stood out with 66 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown to Joel McLaughlin, and both a passing and rushing 2-point conversion.

On defense, Patrick Spencer was the leading tackler and had an interception while DeJesus was able to pick up a fumble recovery.

“It was a ground and pound kind of game,” added Gray. “A lot of guys contributed. It was an overall team effort, good cohesive teamwork.”

Frewsburg is undefeated going into its last game at 4-0 and will be tested against Pembroke who is 4-1, on Saturday. Prior to this week, Frewsburg was the ninth ranked 8-man football team in the state while Pembroke was ranked at 10 just behind them.
