FREDONIA PREVAILS

FREDONIA — The Fredonia Hillbillies (5-6, 2-4) were 7-3 winners over the Southwestern Trojans (3-3, 3-3) in Division 1 West.

Both teams entered the day coming off league losses, with Southwestern losing in an 11-inning marathon against Dunkirk on Monday.

In that game pitcher Aiden Kennedy maxed out his pitch count and fellow hurler Nate Johnson threw more than 90 pitches, making both players unavailable to pitch versus Fredonia.

Fredonia was playing their third game in three nights including road trips to Olean and Sweet Home. Fortunately for Fredonia, ace Owen Ludwig was available, and did not disappoint.

Ludwig went the distance, allowing only four hits, three walks, one earned run and recorded five strikeouts.

Southwestern head coach Jared Brown turned to freshman Jameson Walsh on the hill.

Walsh got off to slow start, but settled down and pitched a solid four innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts.

Fredonia got to Walsh early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first.

Fredonia was threatening in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on and Vandette once again up to bat. This time Vandette drilled a double, scoring Rush and Gullo, who recorded his second hit of the game prior, making the score 5-0.

Thanks to Johnson, Southwestern was able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when he singled, scoring Spencer Kane who had led off the inning with a single.

Johnson finished the night with two hits, one run scored an RBI and a walk. Fredonia responded scoring two runs in the bottom half of the fifth.

Calvin Ricker took over for Walsh on the hill for the Trojans.

Isaac Hind singled and Xander Hind doubled before Bushey’s two-run single in the first inning. Dillon Schrader followed with an RBI single.

In the second, a walk and three batters being hit by pitches turned into a run. Schrader followed with a three-run double and Wyatt Adams hit an RBI single.

Xander Hind capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the fifth.

Damion Franklin and Kadin Ehmke each had a single for the Bulldogs (1-5, 0-3) while Ehmke struck out seven on the mound.

Orchard Park (6-4, 3-3 ECIC D1) led 4-0 after the top of the first inning before the Marauders (9-2, 6-0 CCAA D1 West) tied the game with a four-run second inning. Alex Ahlstrom hit a two-run single ahead of Mike Norton’s towering two-run home run.

“We played a quality team,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said, “and had quality at-bats all day.”

Ahlstrom finished with three hits and Norton had two, but the Marauders’ only other hit was a single by Bryson Travis.

Mike Porpiglia, Tanner Schrantz, Jack Lanski and Nahan Pakulski combined to strike out five, but walked nine in the game.

FRONTIER SHUTS OUT RAIDERS

Nick Schulz tossed a complete-game two-hitter and helped his own cause with a solo home run to propel Frontier to a 7-0 Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 victory over Jamestown.

The right-hander struck out 10. The only two hits he allowed — a single and a double — were off the bat of Juan Matos.

The Falcons held a slim 2-0 lead through five innings, but they tallied five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

The loss dropped Jamestown’s record to 1-6.
