Tarp Skunks Pitchers Falter In 10-3 Loss To Elmira On Saturday

ELMIRA — Elmira took the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning and shut Jamestown out over the final five innings en route to a 10-3 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League victory Saturday at Dunn Field.

The Tarp Skunks actually outhit the Pioneers 10-7, but were done in by their pitching staff. Jamestown pitchers combined to walk seven and also hit five Elmira hitters.

The first two Pioneers in the bottom of the fifth inning were retired before four runs scored on three hits and a pair of walks. Sam Polanco walked and stole second before Dom Popa singled to left field. Donovan Montgomery followed with a two-run single to left field and then stole second. After Jack Laird walked Ben Schorr, he was replaced by Evan Harrison who allowed a single to Cam Hill and threw a wild pitch with Elmilien Pitre at the plate that allowed Schorr to score.

Padraig O’Shaughnessy hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Julian Uejima hit a two-run single in the fourth inning for the Tarp Skunks’ three runs.

Justin Bailey finished 3 for 4 with a double, Luke Turner was 2 for 4 and Justin Bowers doubled for Jamestown.

Laird allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two in 4 2/3 innings on the mound for the Tarp Skunks. Harrison took the loss, allowing no runs on a hit and a walk in 1 1/3 innings while striking out one. Christian Lewis allowed three runs on a hit and two walks while striking out three in one inning before Aaron Hair allowed two runs on no hits and two walks while striking out one in the eighth inning.

Popa and Hill each had two of Elmira’s seven singles in the game.

Jamestown returns to action tonight at Diethrick Park against the Niagara Power. First pitch is set for 7.
