Jack Laird had his “A” game Friday night.

The right-hander from Seton Hill (Pennsylvania) University tossed a one-hitter, struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk to propel Jamestown to a 3-0 victory over Elmira in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game before 628 fans at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park.

The Tarp Skunks’ offense did just enough to support Laird, scoring a run in the sixth inning courtesy of Justin Bowers’ home run, and two insurance runs in the eighth.

In the eighth, DiMaggio Cazares was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored all the way from first on a throwing error that allowed Justin Bailey, who laid down a sacrifice bunt, to reach third with no outs. Bailey was thrown out at the plate following Bowers’ fielder’s choice groundout. After Bowers stole second base and Chase Carlson struck out, Haiden Hunt singled — he finished with two hits for the game — to plate Bowers.

Armed with a 3-0 lead, Laird retired Elmira in order in the ninth to improve to 2-0 on the season. His ERA fell to 2.41.

Cam Hill was equally impressive for the Pioneers, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out 11 and not issuing a walk in six innings. Peter Theodorellis worked the final two frames. Elmira’s lone hit was a sixth-inning single by Elmilien Pitre.

The victory raised the Tarp Skunks’ record to 9-4, good for first place in the West Division, a half-game in front of Elmira (9-5).

Jamestown is back in action today when it travels to Batavia.
