FALCONER — Inside or out, the Falconer/Cassadaga Valley wrestling team keeps rolling along.

The Golden Cougars (3-0) used eight pins and a major decision to knock off Jamestown, 64-12, in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association match Tuesday afternoon.

What was different about this encounter, however, was that it wasn’t held in the Falconer Central School gymnasium. Instead, it was competed outside on Bill Race Field in the shadows of the scoreboard in the facility’s south end zone.

“It was something we’ve talked about doing,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley coach Drew Wilcox said. ” … We got lucky. We had the perfect night for it.”

Registering falls for Falconer/Cassadaga Valley were Vinnie Bloomberg (132), Joey Pillittieri (145), Brodie Little (152), Kyle Keefe (172), Devyn Morrison (189), Collin Beichner (285), Karsen Lundgren (110) and Brayden Newman (118). Teammate Bryant Morrison registered a major decision at 172 pounds.

“They were excited. (Wrestling outdoors) was something different,” Wilcox said. “They’ll look back in 20 years and they’ll always remember tonight. We’re trying to create memories like this, because they’ve had a lot of stuff taken from them (because of COVID-19) in the last year and a half.”

For the Red Raiders, Connor Bush (102) and Taylor Crofoot (126) recorded pins.

“Jamestown is a really young team. They have a nice group of ninth-graders coming through,” Wilcox said. “We took advantage of that, but they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.”
