Maple Grove’s DeMinks Heading To Sectionals

Dunkirk’s Ryan Wills is the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association singles champion after beating Maple Grove’s Porter DeMink 6-3, 6-0 in the finals Thursday at Southwestern Central School.

Olean’s Mark Brown and Alex Blehar won the doubles title by beating Fredonia’s Trevor Napoli and Neil Cosico 10-1 in the final Friday.

Wills had to work to win his title. On Wednesday in the semifinals he beat Falconer’s Zach Kianos 6-0, 6-0 as well as Fredonia’s Jackson Spangler 6-2, 7-5.

In a three-hour semifinal marathon Thursday, Wills defeated Allegany-Limestone’s Thinus Marais 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 before outlasting DeMink in the final.

Napoli and Cosico advanced to the doubles final by beating Cassadaga Valley’s Ian Anderson and Dylan Ansell 6-0, 6-0 as well as Olean’s Isaac Moses and Aaron Aiello 6-1, 6-1.

In the semifinals, the Hillbillies duo had to deal with Maple Grove’s Trey DeMink and Brendan Weatherup. Napoli and Cosico won the first set 7-6 with an 11-9 tiebreaker before DeMink and Weatherup won the second set 6-1. With rain starting to fall, a 10-point tiebreaker was played and the Fredonia pair won 12-10.

The Section VI championships will be held Monday at Orchard Park.
