FREDONIA — Olean started Wednesday’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West baseball game against Fredonia just the way it wanted.
The Huskies finished it the right way, too.
Olean scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun the Hillbillies in a 10-8 victory.
The Huskies’ top four hitters had seven of their team’s nine hits and helped their team jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Fredonia starter Owen Ludwig. The Nos. 1-3 hitters hit consecutive singles in the first. Ludwig nearly escaped the jam with a pickoff and a long foul fly out, but Olean’s No. 7 hitter hit a two-out two-run single before the inning was over.
The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Huskies starting pitcher Jason Brooks reached his maximum pitch limit and the Hillbillies finally capitalized with five runs to take a 5-3 lead. Freshman Owen Rush singled up the middle and senior Jake Helmer hit a line drive to left field for his second hit of the game. Nick Frazier then walked to load the bases before pinch-hitter Jayden Whitfield hit an RBI single up the middle.
Simon Davis was then hit by a pitch to force in another run before leadoff hitter Joey Vandette hit a line drove to left field to drive in Frazier and pinch-runner Andrew Camp. Davis later scored on a wild pitch.
Ludwig, after throwing 21 pitches in the first inning, had only thrown 71 pitches going into the top of the seventh. He retired the first batter on one pitch before Olean followed with five hits and two walks to plate seven runs for a 10-5 lead.
Winning pitcher Reiley Silvis gave up three walks and a double to Vandette allowing Fredonia to score three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Hillbillies stranded runners at second and third to end the game.
Fredonia will be on the road Friday to take on Southwestern.
MARAUDERS ‘SQUEEZE’ PAST TROJANS IN NINE INNINGS
DUNKIRK — Dunkirk remained unbeaten on the young season.
It wasn’t easy.
The Marauders rallied from three deficits before finally edging Southwestern 10-9 in nine innings of Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West baseball action Wednesday.
In the bottom of the ninth, winning pitcher Mike Porpiglia walked to second on a passed ball and then beat a play at third on a bunt by Javier DeJesus. On the very next pitch, Bryson Travis laid down a squeeze bunt and Porpiglia beat the play at the plate for the winning run.
“What they did today; coming back 5-0, down 7-4 and down 9-7,” Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda said. “Just a lot of wherewithal and a lot of heart went into this win today.”
The Trojans led 5-0 after the top of the fourth inning before the Marauders (4-0, 2-0) answered with a four-run bottom half of the inning.
Southwestern scored two in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead, but Dunkirk answered with a three-run bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Mike Norton’s towering two-run home run to right field was the key hit.
The Trojans scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but again the Marauders answered to set up the ninth.
Dunkirk No. 4 hitter Nick Zatorski walked five times — twice intentionally — as part of 19 Marauders walks. Jagoda’s team stranded 17 men on base.
Phil Messina was 3 for 3 with three walks, a triple and two RBIs. Norton also had a double
Nate Johnson had a double and a triple with three RBIs while Dustin Hendrix, Calvin Ricker and Chris Neal each had two hits for Southwestern.
EAGLES COAST
SALAMANCA — After being shutout in a no-hitter Monday against Salamanca, Ellicottville finally got on the board Wednesday.
The Eagles collected 12 hits and took control with a five-run third inning en route to a 13-2 six-inning defeat of Cattaraugus-Little Valley in the Veterans Cup.
Lucas Marsh and Ryan DeKay had back-to-back RBI triples in the third inning to spur the Ellicottville offense.
Armed with a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning, the Eagles struck for seven runs to end the game. Nathan Ploetz had a two-run single and Braydon Wyatt had a two-run triple.
Marsh, DeKay and Ploetz each finished with two hits for Ellicottville (1-1). DeKay earned the win on the mound, striking out seven while allowing three hits and two runs.
Kodi Colton, Seth Howland and Gavin Baxter each singled for the Timberwolves, who fell to 0-2.
