Several JCC Wrestlers Shine At National Tournament In Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The Jamestown Community College Jayhawks ended the first day of the National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Championships with several strong performances.

Both No. 7 Trenton Donahue (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) and No. 7 Ross Abram (Eden/Eden) earned berths to the quarterfinals after winning their first two matches of the day.

At 141 pounds, Donahue started out with a pin of Brayden Strachan of Cowley College before earning a 6-0 win in his second match of the tournament.

In quarterfinal action, Maris Branford of Clackamas Community College was a major decision winner over Donahue.

Abram got started out with a win via technical fall over Brandon Rohr of Cloud County Community College, and finished off Jahmon Spiller of Ancilla College in the second round to advance to the quarters.

In his third match of the day, Abram fell to Jacobi Deal of Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Entering the tournament with a No. 8 seed at 285, Alex Christy (Fredonia/Fredonia) started with a pin of Emmanuel Briggs of Neosho County Community College. That was followed by a loss via pin to Curtis Ruff of Triton College, sending Christy to the consolation bracket.

After suffering first-round losses, both Marcus Evans (Randolph/Randolph) and Taige Jones (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) would return to form in the consolation brackets.

Mac Martinez of Otero Junior College was a 7-5 winner over Evans in the first round at 125 pounds. Entering the consolation bracket, Evans picked up back-to-back wins via fall.

At 133, Jones suffered a loss via 6-3 decision to Jake Campbell of Henry Ford College in his opener, but responded with a major decision win and another victory via fall after entering the consolation bracket.

At 149 pounds Dominik Rodriguez (Gowanda/Gowanda) dropped his opening match to Morgan Potts of Neosho County Community College via pin. Rodriguez would exit the tournament after losing in the consolation bracket.

At 157 pounds Otto Davidson (Congers/Clarkstown) got his tournament started with a 13-0 major decision win over Gabriel Lee of Henry Ford College.

Entering the second round, Brandon Bollinger of North Idaho College earned a major decision win over Davidson, sending him to the consolation bracket.

At 165 pounds Juan Urbina of Pratt Community College pinned JCC’s Andrew Bungar (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), sending him to the consolation bracket. Bungar fell in his second match of the day to exit the tournament.

The Jayhawks were ninth in team standings after one round of action.
