With the weather turning in early April, the Jamestown Community College golf team is eager to get out on the course and start competing.

“We have a good group of golfers this year,” said interim head coach George Sisson. “We have some guys that grew up in the area that have immense experience. I think we will turn some heads this season.”

This year’s team consists of freshman David Allen (Jamestown/Falconer High School), Josh Brown (Randolph/Randolph ), Matthew Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School), and Anthony Gullo (Jamestown,/Jamestown). Each golfer will bring their own unique talents to make them a well-rounded unit.

“Everyone brings something to the table,” Sisson said. “These guys have been helping each other throughout the preseason which is what you want to see in a team.”

The squad will open up the season today, as it hosts Niagara County CC at Chautauqua Golf Club.

The season was originally scheduled to start this weekend at Tompkins Cortland CC, but with the stretch of great weather, the two teams couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“I can’t remember a spring like this that we are having,” said Sisson. “Myself and Coach Oleski of NCCC want to give our student-athletes as many opportunities to golf this season, so we are making it happen.”

The Jayhawks will compete in seven regular-season golf matches before the NJCAA Region 3 Championships. This season’s NJCAA Region 3 Championships will be held at the Kaluhyat Golf Course at the Turning Stone Resort, where Jamestown CC will act as the host institution on May 15-16.

“We wanted to find a centralized location to have our NJCAA Region 3 Championships this season,” said Sisson. “We found a beautiful course at the Turning Stone Resort. I think the student-athletes will really enjoy their time and the course.”

The Jayhawks will close out the season at the NJCAA Division III Golf Championships, where they will be the host school for the 22nd season, dating back to the 1999 season. The championships will be held at Chautauqua Golf Club from June 7-11.

“It is an honor that we are the host institution for yet another season of golf,” Sisson said. “The Chautauqua Golf Club is a beautiful course to play on where we see some really great golfers. It also helps that our golfers will have a bit of an edge going in the championships having played on the course a few times this season.”
