RANDOLPH RALLIES
PAST GOWANDA
GOWANDA — Randolph hasn’t been losing a game in a long time.
Monday, the Cardinals were down big.
Then Coach David Pihlblad’s team rallied.
Randolph outscored Gowanda, 31-4, over the final 12 minutes of action to rally for a 57-44 Division 1 East win.
The Panthers (6-4, 5-4) led after the first quarter and after the game was tied at halftime, the hosts opened up a 14-point lead midway through the third quarter.
But the Cardinals responded with a 13-0 run to end the third quarter and outscored Gowanda, 18-4, in the fourth quarter to win.
“I think it was maybe the best thing that could’ve happened for us,” Pihlblad said of his Cardinals, who improved to 14-0 overall and 9-0 in the league. “This was the first time we’ve really had adversity in a long time. I don’t know the last time we were losing a game. To not play our best and turn it around was really, really good for us heading toward playoffs.”
Six players scored in the final eight minutes for Pihlblad’s team.
“It was really good team basketball,” he said.
Sydney Hvizdzak led Randolph with 25 points, 12 rebounds and five steals; Payton Morrison had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals; Alyssa Adams had eight rebounds; and Quinn Pence had five rebounds.
Miya Scanlan led Gowanda with 18 points while Scotia Snyder and Aaliyah Stevens each had 8 points.
“Gowanda is good. They are tall and big. They are a tough matchup for us,” Pihlblad said. “Miya Scanlan is 6-foot-3 and played really well. … Gowanda played really, really hard tonight.”
