Fry Has Career-High 32 For Fredonia Boys Vs. Franklinville

Sophomore Ethan Fry had a career-high 32 points to lead Fredonia past nonleague Franklinville, 82-55, in boys basketball Thursday at Fredonia High School.

Fry — whose previous high was 18 at Olean on March 5 — scored 23 points in the middle two quarters Thursday as the Hillbillies outscored the Panthers, 43-22.

“Ethan was very effective breaking down their zone with dribble penetration and distributing the ball,” Fredonia coach Nick Bertrando said. “We did a pretty good job against their zone.”

Tyler Putney had 23 points and Nick Frazier had 13 for Fredonia (8-5), which added Thursday’s game after a Dunkirk game earlier this week was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

“When we were able to come up with a time and a date to play Franklinville, I knew it was going to be competitive,” Bertrando said. “We really looked at it as an opportunity to continue to clean up some of these inefficiencies we have as we move toward playoffs.”

The Hillbillies will have another nonleague test tonight at Jamestown, the No. 1 seed in the Section VI Class AA playoffs.

“That will be a really good test for us. They are a phenomenal program,” Bertrando said. “They have size, they have shooters and they have speed — exactly what you want in a nonleague game before playoffs.”

Blake Frank led Franklinville (9-4) with 29 points.

“We gave up a little more penetration that I would’ve liked,” Bertrando said. “I was happy being able to get up and down, and get out in transition for some opportunities there as well.”
