SALAMANCA — Freshman Lucus Brown had 16 points and seven rebounds as Salamanca rallied for a 60-48 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West win over Southwestern on Monday evening.

The Trojans led 30-27 at halftime before the Warriors outscored them, 33-18, in the second half.

Senior Jarod White had his fourth straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Lucas McKenna added 11 points and five rebounds for Salamanca (2-3, 2-2).

“We played outstanding defense tonight. Southwestern is a dangerous offensive team. They were undefeated coming into the game for a reason,” Salamanca head coach Adam Bennett said. “They share the ball, attack the basket and make it really difficult to guard. We did a nice job of sealing the gaps quickly and keeping them out of the paint. Really proud of our effort tonight against a solid team.”

Calvin Ricker had 15 points, Matt Pannes had 12 and Aidan Kennedy had 11 for Southwestern (5-1, 3-1), which went 5 for 13 from the free throw line..

GATORS STYMIE HILLBILLIES

ALLEGANY — Fredonia struggled offensively in a 46-39 Division 1 West loss to Allegany-Limestone.

The Hillbillies (4-2, 2-2), who had received balanced scoring during a recent string of success, had just two players — Michael Berg and Tyler Putney — score 10 points apiece while the rest of the team combined for just eight field goals.

“We struggled from the floor tonight. It had a lot to do with Allegany-Limestone’s defense,” Fredonia head coach Nick Bertrando said. “They limited our opportunities to get good looks.”

Tyler Curran led the Gators (3-1, 3-1) with 24 points.

The game was tied at 10 at the end of the first quarter, but after Allegany-Limestone scored to open the second quarter, Fredonia never tied the game again.

In the fourth, the Hillbillies got as close as one at 38-37 with under two minutes remaining, but the Gators scored to make it 40-37 and then went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

“After the past couple of games, I thought we sort of had it figured out,” Bertrando said about losing junior Nick Whitfield for the season.
