Bona Women Fall At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. — The St. Bonaventure University women’s basketball team fell to Rhode Island, 76-60, Saturday afternoon at the Ryan Center.

Saturday marked the second conference game in as many days for the Bonnies for the first time in regular season history.

I’yanna Lops led the way for the Brown and White, scoring a career-high 14 points on a perfect 5 for 5 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Lops also grabbed five rebounds and added two blocks in the contest. Also scoring in double figures for the Bonnies were Asianae Johnson with 13 points and Tori Harris added 10.

In the second quarter, the Rams jumped out to a 12-point lead, 20-8.

The Bonnies, however, used a 12-3 run, capped off by a Harris three-pointer to bring the visitors within three, 23-20.

Rhode Island (5-5, 5-2 A-10) responded with an 8-0 break of its own to grow the lead back to 11 with 1:30 remaining in the half.

A 3 from Maddie Dziezgowski and a pair of free throws from Lops brought the Bonnies (2-8, 1-6 A-10) within eight, 33-25, heading into the locker room at halftime.

It was all Rhode Island in the second half, using a 9-0 run over two minutes to jump out to a 22-point lead over the Bonnies.

Rhode Island’s lead grew to as many as 24 in the fourth quarter and the Rams never looked back.

Catherine Cairns paced the Rams offense with 22 points with six made threes in 28 minutes off the bench. The Rams shot 50 percent from the floor and went 11 for 23 from distance, paced by Cairns. Emmanuelle Tahane had a massive effort as well, posting 18 points and 13 rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor.

The Bonnies are off until Friday when Saint Louis visits the Reilly Center. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.

NOTES: Emily Calabrese played in her 100th career game for the Bonnies. … The Bonnies outscored the Rams in the paint, 34-30, but Rhode Island owned a 37-24 advantage in rebounding. … Bona finished the game shooting 42.3 percent (22 for 52) from the floor while the Rams shot at a 50.0 percent (29 for 58) clip. … All six of Johnson’s rebounds were on the offensive glass. … Olivia Brown finished with nine points and Deja Francis contributed seven.
