The Post-Journal Classic Tennis Tournament Begins Today With One Of Largest Fields

LAKEWOOD — The Post-Journal Classic Tennis Tournament begins today at the Lakewood YMCA, bringing the largest field in 20 years.

The men’s open field includes contenders Matt Johnson, Thomas Pellegrino, Travis Myler and Tyler Beaton and Cooper Miller. Myler and Pellegrino will enter as the top seeds in the men’s open doubles, where Miller and Johnson will also join forces.

In boys high school singles, Logan Fincher and Michael Gerace are the top contenders. Jacob Mehler and Aravind Turaga will also offer good competition. Mehler and Turaga will team up and be a top seed in boys high school doubles.

In girls high school singles, Hiba Munir of Southwestern and Macy Youngberg of Falconer are the top seed, with CeCe Eklum of Jamestown also be in the mix.

Chautauqua County doubles champions Macy and Nicole Youngberg will be the top seed in the girls high school doubles. Munir and Elizabeth Kane will be the second seed.

More than 20 rising stars will complete in a round-robin on tonight. Ten teams will compete Sunday afternoon for the mixed doubles championship. The tournament runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday and is sponsored by The Post-Journal and Farrell Roofing.

There can only be one spectator per player and masks must be worn at all times unless playing in the tournament.
