Youngbergs Claim High School Girls Doubles Title In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD — Champions were crowned in 10 different divisions at The Post-Journal Classic Tennis Tournament over the weekend at the Lakewood YMCA.

With over 130 entries, the tournament experienced its largest turnout in 20 years.

The Rising Stars Junior Singles Division was the first to crown a champion on Friday afternoon. Matthew Persia beat Alannah Garza, 6-4, in the final. Persia advanced through the semifinals by beating Jack Sherry, 4-1, while Garza advanced with a 4-0 defeat of Javier Gonzales.

Later Friday, the Intermediate Girls Singles Division took to the courts. Angelina Fiasco, Riley Farrugello, Ella Card and Erika Pickard advanced to the semifinals where Pickard defeated Fiasco, 5-4, with a 7-5 tie-breaker and Farrugello edging Card, 5-4, with a 9-7 tie-breaker. In the final, Farrugello earned the title with a 4-2 defeat of Pickard.

The Intermediate Girls Doubles Division capped Friday’s action. Farrugello and Fiasco won the title with 4-0 victories over Natasha Ferry and Kealin Hatfield as well as Elizabeth Heacox and Mackenzie Lester.

Hatfield and Ferry beat Heacox and Lester, 4-2, in the consolation match.

On Saturday, the High School Boys Singles Division opened play. Mirthinus Marais beat Logan Fincher, 6-2, 6-7, 10-6, to win the title. Fincher advanced to the final by beating Jacob Mehler, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, in the semifinals while Marais advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Aravind Turaga.

In the High School Girls Singles Division, Hiba Munir beat Macy Youngberg, 6-1, 6-1, to win the championship. Munir advanced to the final by topping CeCe Eklum, 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinals while Youngberg advanced with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 defeat of Elizabeth Kane.

Mehler and Turaga won the High School Boys Doubles Division with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Fincher and Ian Darling in the final. Mehler and Turaga won their semifinal match, 6-4, 6-1, over Will Strassburg and Alex Watkins while Fincher and Darling beat Luke Smelko and Michael Gerace, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8.

Macy and Nicole Youngberg won the High School Girls Doubles Division with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory over Munir and Kane. The Youngbergs beat Eliza Dawes and Ryann Hayes, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals while Munir and Kane beat Angela Chardeen and Sophia Potalivo, 6-1, 6-1.

Matt Johnson captured the Men’s Open Singles Division with a 7-6, 6-7, 10-7 victory over Tom Pellegrino in the final. Johnson advanced through the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Travis Myler while Pellegrino advanced by virtue of a 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 win over Tyler Beaton.

In the Men’s Open Doubles Division, Johnson and James Getty beat Myler and Pellegrino, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8, to claim the title. Johnson and Getty topped Jim Panebianco and Bob Olson, 6-7, 7-5, 10-8, in the semifinals while Pellgrino and Myler beat Logan Cross and Ben Wright, 6-3, 6-3.

The Open Mixed Doubles Division capped the weekend. Matt and Mikayla Johnson captured the championship with a 4-1 victory over Pellegrino and Sharon Grijalva. The Johnsons beat Kelley and Brian Wood, 4-1, in the semifinals while Pellegrino and Grijalva beat Macy Youngberg and Jamie Glatz, 4-2, in the semifinals.
