Gens, Bauer Each Win A Match At Section VI Tourney

WILLIAMSVILLE — Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association girls tennis players picked up four wins in the first round of the Section VI championships last Friday at the Miller Tennis Center.

In singles action, Fredonia’s Bernie Gens and Chautauqua Lake’s Emily Bauer each picked up a victory.

Gens topped Iroquois’ Amelia Greenawalt, 6-1, 6-1, while Bauer beat Williamsville South’s Riley Zuber, 6-2, 6-1. In other first-round matches, Jamestown’s CeCe Eklum lost to Clarence’s Madison Enser, 6-2, 6-2, and Olean’s Caroline DeRose fell to Williamsville North’s Eileen Wang, 6-0, 6-0.

In the quarterfinals, Gens lost to Williamsville East’s Kareena Cheruvu, 6-2, 6-1, and Bauer was defeated by Grand Island’s Kiersten Grown, 6-1, 6-2.

Wang went on to win the championship, 6-2, 6-3 over Clarence’s Madeleine Eiss while Brown took third place over Williamsville East’s Kareena Cheruvu, 6-0, 6-1.

Falconer’s Macy Youngberg and Nicole Youngberg advanced out of the first round in doubles with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Amherst’s Sophie Schwartz and Anna Wheat.

Southwestern’s Elizabeth Kane and Hiba Munir also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Orchard Park’s Olivia Bartosz and Mallory Musterait. Frewsburg’s Anjolie Sanfilippo and Elise Sposato were beaten by Williamsville East’s Maler Suresh and Tulesi Suresh, 6-2, 6-1. Maple Grove’s Emma Collins and Ryann Hayes were beaten by Clarence’s Ava Casell and Julia Laspro, 6-0, 6-1.

In the quarterfinals, the Youngbergs fell to Williamsville North’s Hannah Flynn and Venera Kalinina, 6-0, 6-0. Kane and Munir lost to Williamsville East’s Sarah Qui and Sophie Wang, 6-0, 6-0.

Orchard Park’s Kelly Barnes and Maya Clinard won the championship, 6-3, 6-4 over Casell and Laspro. Qui and Wang took third place with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Flynn and Kalinina.
