The Jamestown and Area Old Timers are in the finals.

The Old Timers lost their second game in the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination playoff tournament after winning three of its final four regular-season games to finish in third place.

On Aug. 23, Jamestown swept Warren (Ohio), 11-1 and 14-4.

Rick Prindle had seven hits in the two games; Ed Baldensperger had five hits, including a double; and Wade Nelson (a triple and a double) and Mark Hovan both had four.

The Old Timers split a doubleheader with Champion in the regular-season finale on Aug. 30 – winning 3-2 on a walk-off hit in the ninth inning in Game 1 and losing 4-2 in Game 2.

Baldensperger pitched all nine innings for the complete game win and had two hits in the opener. Prindle had four singles on the day. Nelson and Brian Ferry each had a single and a double, and Ron Thomas, Troy Johnson, and Hovan each had two singles. Thomas pitched the night-cap, striking out six Champion batters.

Six days later, Jamestown faced Champion again in the first round of the playoffs, losing 4-2. Baldensperger went the distance, giving up only one earned run. Ferry had three hits, including a double, and Nelson had two singles.

Since being bumped into the losers’ bracket, the Old Timers have knocked out Warren 5-2; United 10-6; and regular-season champion Springfield, which suffered its first defeat of the season in the playoffs at the hands of Champion, 3-2.

The Warren and United games were held on Sept. 6. Jamestown played Springfield on Sept. 12.

Against Warren, Charlie LaDuca picked up the win. Nelson had a single and a double, and Baldensperger and Dave Wortman each had two hits.

Thomas was the winning pitcher against United. Baldensperger had three hits, and Wortman, Johnson, and Larry Persing each had two.

Baldensperger picked up another win, giving up no earned runs against Springfield, and helped his cause with two hits. Nelson had a double and a single, and Wortman and Jon Sitler each had two hits.

The finals were originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, but postponed due to weather. The Old Timers will have to beat Champion twice to win the division title. The first game is set for noon Saturday. A second game, if necessary, will follow.

The Old Timers compete in the National Division of the 50-plus Baseball League of Youngstown, Ohio. Each team may have no more than five players who are at least 47 years old, but not yet 50. A player must be at least 50 to pitch.

This year, due to COVID-19, the team played its home games at Boardman (Ohio) High School instead of Diethrick Park in Jamestown.
