Whipsnakes wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Premier Lacrosse League Championship Series on Sunday, and again Silver Creek graduate Zed Williams was at the center of the action.

Williams had four goals and an assist as Whipsnakes beat Archers, 17-11, at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.

While Williams had another stat-stuffing day, the story of the game was Whipsnakes 2019 league MVP Matt Rambo.

Rambo scored two goals and added eight assists, finishing with a league-record 10 points, to help Whipsnakes secure a bye in the “Battle for the Cup” that begins Tuesday.

Williams opened the scoring early in the first quarter when he spun off a defender toward the front of the net and then scored while diving to the ground.

The University of Virginia product added his second goal later in the first half before completing his fourth hat trick in four games. With time winding down in the second quarter, Rambo found Williams open near the top of the key and the Irving native scored high into the net with less than 2 seconds remaining.

Rambo scored five of his 10 points during the second quarter.

Whipsnakes led 11-9 after a quiet third quarter for Williams, but he helped put the game away in the fourth quarter.

Williams again scored from Rambo for his second straight four-goal game and finally, with 1:30 left in the game, Williams picked up his lone assist when he fed John Haus for his fourth goal to help put the game away.

“It’s pretty easy, Rambo said during the postgame report on NBC Sports Network. “You just throw it to Zeddie and he finishes everything.”

During the four-game round-robin portion of the tournament, Williams finished with 14 goals and three assists on 37% shooting. He is second in the league behind Rambo in points and has six goals more than the next-closest opponents.

Whipsnakes will return to action Thursday in the semifinals. The semifinal winners will play for the title next Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on NBC Sports Network.
