Short Family Hits The Ace Trifecta

LAKEWOOD — The “Short List” got a little longer last weekend.

Using a 9-iron, Ryan Short of Niobe aced the 16th hole at Maplehurst Country Club recently while playing with his brother, Chris Dole. With the hole-in-one, Ryan joined his father, Tom, and his late grandfather, Allen, in that exclusive fraternity.

Tom, then 21, recorded his ace in 1972 when his 7-iron found the bottom of the cup on the 17th hole at Moon Brook Country Club.

He was the first of the Short family to accomplish the feat.

Twenty years later, Allen turned the trick when he aced No. 8 at MBCC with a 5-iron. Amazingly, on the very next hole, Allen, then 66 years old, recorded an eagle on the par 4 ninth.

It took another 28 years, but Ryan, the superintendent at Jackson Valley Golf Club, matched his dad and his grandpa.

“I’m just happy for them,” said Tom, a Niobe resident. “I never saw mine go in, because the ball went down over a knoll. They were able to see theirs. It’s just an exciting feeling.”

Three generations. Three aces.

“It’s amazing,” Tom said.
