Horton Wins Challenge Title At Eriez On Sunday Night

HAMMETT, Pa. — On a beautiful night for racing, albeit with clouds and rain to the south, Chris Horton prevailed for the $500-to-win Challenger championship. Dave Hess Jr., Max Blair, Mike McGee, Matt Alexander and Wesley McCray prevailed in their respective divisions for regular-length feature wins.

The first feature event of the evening was the 15-lap, $500-to-win Challenger championship. Nick Eck took the lead at the start, but before lap one was done Dalton Eggleston and Corey Mason tangled in turn one when lap one was finally complete it was Eck leading Aaron Marcy, and Chris Horton. Horton pulled into second at lap two and to the lead at lap four when yellow flew for Joe Mason, who spun in turn four. For the green, it was Horton, Eck, Marcy, Zack Eller, and Rick Feely. Just one lap later, Feely was second. At seven laps complete, disaster struck when Mark Lawrence climbed the front straight retaining wall, flipping three times and coming to rest on the driver’s side. Jeff Nunemaker, Tyler Walters, and Nick Robie also got involved. All drivers were OK. Another caution flew on the restart when Rod Brit spun sideways in turn one. At the halfway mark, it was Horton leading Feely, Eck, Aaron Marcy, and Harvey. Wes Stull got to fifth at lap lap 10, then Nick Robie got sideways and was facing the turn three wall at 11. Stull got by Harvey for fourth with two to go.

Horton motored on to the win with Feely apparently second, Stull third, Harvey fourth, and Aaron Marcy fifth. In post-race tech, Feely’s car was deemed illegal and he was disqualified, losing all points and money for the spot. Stull was moved to second, Harvey third, and Aaron Marcy to fourth. Mease was credited with fifth.

Street Stocks were next for their 15-lap feature with Wesley McCray leasing lap one over Steve Yokum, John Boardman, Mike Reed and Kyle Couchenour. Reed spun in turn two of lap two for the first caution. Boardman grabbed second at the restart over Yokum, Jimmy Kennerknecht, and Couchenour. Yellow flew at four for Shane Applebee spun at the head of the main straight. At green Boardman made a run for the lead, but McCray held him off. The halfway order was McCray, Boardman, Couchenour, Yokum, and Black. Black was fourth at lap 12 with Kennerknecht now fifth. Couchenour came to second with two to go. The final order at the checkers was McCray, Couchenour, Black, and Kennerknecht.

Darrell Bossard and Steve Kania brought the Mill Run Collision Center Super Late Model field to green in a tight pack in turn one when Dave Lyon spun sideways eventually involving Max Blair, Anthony Marotto, John Lobb and Eastman Hedman. At the completion of one lap it was Bossard leading Kania, Bump Hedman, Dave Hess Jr., and Chad Wright. Kania was the leader at two complete. Hess came to second at two with Bossard now third, Chub Frank fourth, and Hedman fifth. At turn four on lap five, Hess made an attempt for the lead, but fell back to second. He tried again on lap seven, this time successful. At lap seven, Brandon Groters came to a halt against the front straight wall, slowing the race under yellow. At green, Frank blasted into second. At 10 laps it was Hess, Frank, Kania, Mike Knight, and Chris Hackett. At 11 complete, Lobb and Hedman spun in turn one. The halfway order was Hess, Frank, Hackett, Kania, and Knight. Knight replaced Kania for fourth at lap 14. The battle for the lead appeared to heat up at 19 when Frank began closing the gap, but two laps later Dutch Davies slapped the front straight wall and headed pitside. The order was now Hess, Frank, Knight, Hackett, and Kania. The order remained the same through to the checkers.

The Economods were next with Zack Lenart and Jason Brightman on the front row. Lenart led lap one over Matt Alexander, Brightman, Jarrit Young, and Garrett Calvert. Gary Olson, Brad Boyd, and Tim Stronghart all spun in turn one. At lap three Jarrit Young spun in turn three then came to a halt re-entering the track. He then retired pitside. Lenart took the lead from the restart to lap five when he spun in turn four, ending his time at the top. For green it was now Alexander, Bobby Vogt, Kyle Layton, Brightman, and Steve Simon. At lap six, Layton had a very slight lead over Vogt for second when yellow flew for Todd Miller, who spun in turn one. Alexander, Vogt, Layton, and Simon were the top four at halfway. At nine laps, Nate Young got sideways in turn two, losing a lot of ground, but managed to continue without causing a caution. On lap 13, Young was not as fortunate, spinning out in turns one and two. Olson stopped in turn four and needed towed. At 13, Miller spun in one and Calvert was penalized for “jumping” the start. The finish saw Alexander winning over Vogt, Layton, Simon, and Lenart.

Michael McGee and Troy Johnson were on the front row for the E-Mod Feature, but at lap three Steve Rex and Jarrod Silvis spun in turn one with McGee leading Johnson, Randy Hall, Ty Rhoades, and Joel Watson, the opening-night winner. At lap four, Hall had displaced Johnson for second with Johnson now having to defend third from Rhoades, who was next to him at the line. At this time, Alan Atkinson and CJ Ramsey got into the front straight wall. Steve Rex got way up the track in turns three and four, slowing dramatically. McGee continued to lead Hall, Johnson, Watson now fourth, and Rhoades. At seven, Rhoades was slightly ahead of Watson. Dave Lamphere spun in turn four at nine laps. The halfway order was McGee, Hall, Rhoades, Johnson and Watson. The restart was pulled back when Lamphere didn’t fire at the flag. Rhoades pulled to second at lap 13 and Watson to fourth at 15 with John Boyd fifth. With three to go, Rhoades made an attempt at the lead, but was rebuffed when McGee turned and sped away as soon as he spotted Rhoades coming. With one lap to go, the final yellow appeared when Mark Titus slowed to a halt in turn one. The one-lap dash to the finish had McGee cruising to the win over Rhoades, Watson, Hall, and Boyd.

The night-capper was for the RUSH Late Models with former champion, Jason Genco, on the pole and Frank to his right. Genco led to turn two with Frank gaining the lead at the end of the lap over Genco, Darrell Bossard, yet another champion Scott Gurdak, and the defending class champion Max Blair. Yellow appeared in lap four for a spin by Jacob Peterson. At five laps in, Frank was leading Blair, Bossard, Kyle Zimmerman, and Jason Genco, second through fifth with RUSH championships at the track. At lap seven, Peterson drifted to a stop in turn two. The driveshaft from Brian Larson’s mount was on the front straight. On eight, Frank and Blair were even on the back chute with Blair inches ahead at the end of the lap. At the halfway point, Blair had sole possession of the spot over Frank, Bossard, Zimmerman, and Gurdak. At lap 13, Breyton Santee was fifth with Zimmerman taking third at 14. At 15, Santee and Gurdak were side by side for fifth. Lapping started at 17 with Blair increasing his lead, even in traffic. At the finish it was Blair, Frank, Zimmerman, Santee, and Gurdak.
