Torres Triumphant

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Jamestown Community College has a new National Junior College Athletic Association All-American wrestler.

With his 8-5 decision over Rowan College at Burlington County’s Tyler Baer to advance to the semifinals, Dan Torres (174 pounds) officially earned All-American status, going undefeated on the first day of NJCAA Wrestling Championships and will compete for a national title this morning beginning at 10:30 CST.

Torres, the 11-seed, dispatched Ellsworth CC’s 22-seed Justin Grant in a 5-0 decision in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating No. 6 seed Dax Bennett of Clackamas CC by a 10-5 decision.

The Cassadaga native will face off against No. 2 seed Jayden Smith of Mercyhurst Northeast in the semifinal. Should Torres be victorious, he will then face the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Jordan Bushey of Niagara CC and Jeremiah Colon of Rochester Community and Technical College, the No. 5 seed. Bushey and Torres last met in the Eastern A District Championships, in which Bushey came away with a 6-1 decision.

Seth MacTavish (157 pounds) went 2-2 on Friday before being eliminated by Andrew Gamble of Iowa Central CC, falling in 57 seconds. The sophomore began the day with a 6-0 decision over Davion Barnes of Itasca CC, before a 13-0 major decision by Dallas Boone of Neosho CC forced him into the consolation bracket.

MacTavish rebounded in the consolation bracket, defeating Braydin Johnson of Minnesota West Community and Technical College in a 13-5 major decision before falling to Gamble.

Freshmen Taige Jones (141 pounds) and Otto Davidson (165) both went 0-2 on the day. Jones fell to Loye Burhead of Spartanburg Methodist by a 12-3 major decision in the first round before losing to Isaiah Smith of Mercyhurst North East by an 18-11 decision in the consolation first round.Davidson (165), meanwhile, was defeated by Labette CC’s Caleb Wise via a fall in the first round, before losing via a 23-8 technical fall by North Idaho’s Izaiah Duran.
