COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — After what has been a historic season for Jamestown Community College 174-pounder Dan Torres, his season came to an end after a hard-fought match in the finals at the NJCAA Championships on Saturday.

To start his day, Torres faced No. 2 Jayden Smith from Northeast Oklahoma and was a good test to start the afternoon. Both competitors battled back and forth in the first period before Torres gained the advantage in the second period. Torres was able to ride out Smith in the third period to help secure the win.

Moving onto the finals, it was laid out perfectly for it to be an all Region 3 match. Torres faced No. 1 seed Jordan Bushey from Niagara County Community College, a rematch from the 2020 NJCAA Eastern District A Championships where Bushey came away with a 2-0 decision win.

In the finals, Bushey got on the board to go up 2-0 with a takedown. Torres was able to escape to cut the deficit to 2-1. Torres escaped once again but Bushey was awarded the ride-time point to help secure the 3-2 victory.

Torres was the highest-placed Jayhawk since Phil Roblee won a championship in 1977.

Torres finished the season with a record of 42-7, a new JCC single-season record for wins.

On Friday, Torres went 3-0 to earn All-American status. He opened his day with a 5-0 win over Ellsworth CC’s Justin Grant. In the second round, Torres took the lead in the third period en route to a 10-5 decision. In the quarterfinals, Torres topped Rowan College’s Tyler Baer, 8-5.

Seth MacTavish, wrestling at 157 pounds, went 2-2 on Friday. He opened the day with a 6-0 decision over Itasca CC’s Davion Barnes before losing to Neosho County CC’s Dallas Boone, 13-0. In the consolation bracket, MacTavish beat Minnesota West Community & Technical College’s Braydin Johnson, 13-5, before getting pinned by Iowa Central CC’s Andrew Gamble in 57 seconds.

Taige Jones (141 pounds) and Otto Davidson (165 pounds) went 0-2 on Friday.

First, Jones lost to Spartanburg Methodist College’s Loye Burkhead, 12-3, before he lost an 18-11 decision to Mercyhurst North East’s Isaiah Smith.

Davidson was pinned by Labette CC’s Caleb Wise in 2:24 before losing a 23-8 technical fall to North Idaho College’s Izalah Duran.

As a team, the Jayhawks finished 24th out of 51 teams with 18.5 points.
