Five Locals Place At State Wrestling Tournament

ALBANY — Five local wrestlers earned place finishes at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II wrestling championships on Saturday at the Times Union Center.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Martin Ohlsson and Fredonia/Silver Creek/Pine Valley/Forestville/Brocton’s David Ball both finished in fifth place in their respective weight classes. Southwestern’s Dontae Hoose finished sixth while Ball’s teammates Ceric Kristan and Jake Skinner both finished eighth.

At 99 pounds, Ohlsson lost, 9-3, to Tioga’s Gianni Silvestri to move into the consolation bracket. There, Ohlsson was pinned in 2:15 by Newfane’s Aiden Gillings in a rematch of the Section VI championship match before Ohlsson earned a 7-5 decision over Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville’s Darren Florance.

At 113 pounds, Ball earned a 6-2 decision over Palmyra-Macedon’s Dominic Affronti and a 6-2 decision over Coxsackie Athens’ Logan Campbell before losing a 4-1 decision to Cold Spring Harbor’s Jackson Polo. Ball then won a 5-1 decision over Adirondack’s Bryar Croniser.

At 195 pounds, Hoose earned a 2-1 decision over Whitehall/Ft. Ann’s Brendan Covey before pinning John Glenn’s Justin Vega in 1:36. Cold Spring Harbor’s Kolton Gagnon then won a 13-3 major decision over Hoose before the Trojans sophomore lost a 7-0 decision to Holland Patent’s Bryce Dare.

Kristan eliminated Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Hudson Johnson with a 5-2 decision before losing a 4-3 decision to Mount Sinai’s Joe Goodrich. Gouverneur’s Jacob Shippee won the seventh-place match when Kristan bowed out due to injury at the 4:32 mark.

At 285 pounds, Skinner pinned Mattituck’s Tyler Marlborough in just 18 seconds. Mount Markham’s Isaiah Trago then beat Skinner, 7-5, in extra time before the Hillbillies senior lost a 7-2 decision to Whitehall/Ft. Ann’s Spencer Dickinson.

Section VI finished fifth in Division II with 163 points and seventh in Division I with 96.5 points.

Niagara Wheatfield senior Justin McDougald won the Division I 138-pound title with a 3-1 decision; Niagara Falls senior Willie McDougald won the Division I 145-pound crown with an 8-2 decision; and Newfane senior Jaden Heers captured the Division II 285-pound title with a 5-4 decision.
