High School Rowing Meeting Is Feb. 13

The Chautauqua Lake Rowing team will host an informational meeting for the 2020 high school rowing team Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at First Lutheran Church on Chandler and Center streets in Jamestown.

The CLR provides a fun and competitive environment for boys and girls typically in grades 8-12. Athletes as young as seventh grade may be eligible and are handled on an individual basis. No experience is necessary for rowers at any grade level. Rowing has been proven to be a valuable cross-training sport and one of the most team-oriented sports.

Boys and girls who are interested and their parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the informative meeting. Students from all area schools are welcome. Returning team members and their parents are also expected to be in attendance to learn about the team's plans for the upcoming season.

Team head coaches will review the overall program and specifics for the 2020 spring season. Registration is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 24 with indoor practices beginning Monday, March 2. Site locations for registration and practices are currently being finalized. The season concludes with a family picnic Thursday, May 28.

Team participants will learn the basics of rowing techniques and compete in regional races in Erie, Pennsylvania, Buffalo and Rochester. Races also take place in Saratoga Springs for state championships.

Newly established for CLR is the Kathleen McCarthy Scholarship. Beginning with the 2020 season, CLR will now offer scholarships to those in financial need. Candidates need to complete and submit an application to the Scholarship Committee for review. More information will be provided at the meeting and on the website subsequent to the meeting.
