Newman Gives FCV First Team Title With Final Pin

SYRACUSE-The Falconer/Cassadaga Valley wrestling program is now the proud owner of a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championship following a dramatic finish at SRC Arena on Saturday evening.
An astonishing comeback from Brock Johnson at a 195 pounds was the spark to an even more incredible rally down the home stretch, as Collin Beichner, Collin Mower and Brayden Newman all earned wins via fall in the final four matches to give the Golden Falcons an epic 40-39 win over Section XI Mt. Sinai.
Newman would take to the mat for the final bout with his team in a five-point hole, knowing that only a win via fall would be enough for Falconer/Cassadaga Valley to walk away with the title.
After fighting off an early attempted pin by opponent Derek Menechino, Newman did not disappoint as he returned the favor with a storybook finish in the first round at 1:49.
“I need to get off my back,” Newman said of his thoughts when fighting off Menechino. “I’ve worked way too hard for this to let my teammates down, let my coaches down, everything they have done for me. I just knew I had the heart and I was going to get it done.”

The Golden Cougars were 51-31 winners over Section V Palmyra Macedon in their first match before topping Section III Central Valley 45-33 and Section VIII Clarke 42-30 on their way to the finals.
