Jamestown Community College’s Dan Torres won the 174-pound title at the annual JCC Open on Sunday afternoon.

Torres started out his day strong, picking up a 36-second fall over Mike Southwick. Moving on to the quarterfinals, Torres continued to produce, getting a 14-3 major decision win over Nathan Parker of RIT, an NCAA Division III school.

In the semifinals, Torres fought a tough Brent Burbules from NCAA Division II Mercyhurst University and prevailed in a 5-1 decision win to move into the championship match.

In the final, Torres faced Derek Brown of Clarion, a NCAA Division I school. Torres was on the offensive early and often. Torres wore down Brown, coming away with a 9-0 major-decision victory.

Seth MacTavish (157 pounds) also picked up a win for the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 as they travel to Alfred for the Alfred State Duals at 7 p.m.

THUNDERWOLVES WIN SATURDAY

In a battle of nationally ranked teams, No. 13 Jamestown Community College fell to No. 7 Niagara County CC, 41-17, on Saturday evening.

The Jayhawks (4-9) fell behind early in the match, facing a 12-0 deficit after two bouts. Taige Jones (149) got the Jayhawks on the board, picking up a 17-2 technical fall in the second period over Matt Gawron. Jones started out of the gates fast, applying pressure on Gawron. Jones wore down Gawron in the first period and finished him off in the second period.

After giving up another six points, Seth MacTavish (157) got Jamestown in striking distance of the Thunderwolves, picking up a fall to make it 18-11. MacTavish fell behind in the match early before he flipped the script, getting the pin over Trent Ingraham, needing 2:58 to do so.

Dan Torres (174 pounds) got the last victory for the Jayhawks, getting the win by forfeit.
