Sometimes it just takes one big game for a team to get on the right path.

The Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team hopes Monday night’s NJCAA matchup with Lorain County CC turns into that game.

The Jayhawks led 12-2 early and dominated in nearly every aspect of the game en route to a 96-54 victory over the Commodores at the Physical Education Complex.

“We were worried off the bat,” Jamestown CC head coach Travis Wells said. “We just haven’t been playing well. We’ve been really nervous.”

Gabby Iuculano led a quartet of players in double figures for Jamestown CC with 21 points while Katelyn Fardink came off the bench to score 18, including four 3-pointers, and Abi Lisciandro had 12 points.

“She’s thinking a little too much about it,” Wells said of Fardink. “When the game comes to her, she can light it up. She just has to believe it.”

Every player who dressed for the Jayhawks scored at least 2 points.

“Coming back from break,” Wells said, “we wanted to make sure everybody had their wind.”

Marisa Schuppenhauer turned in a fine all-around performance with 10 points, eight assists, seven steals and five rebounds.

“If you need a bucket, she can get you a bucket. If you need a board, she can get you a board,” Wells said of Schuppenhauer. “We always stick her on the other team’s best offensive person. … She can get you anything.”

Vanecia Billings, a two-time Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Division III Player of the Week already this season, led Lorain County CC with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Iuculano and Lisciandro each hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Jayhawks opened up an early 10-point lead before Schuppenhauer and Macey Lundmark closed the first quarter with layups to push the Jamestown CC lead to 23-11 after 10 minutes.

“Hitting those first couple of shots opened things up and gave them confidence,” Wells said. “You always hope for a start like that. We haven’t been able to get it in a while.”

The Jayhawks’ lead grew to 28 at halftime as Izzy Bursch made a 3-pointer on their final possession of the second quarter. Kayla Hohl’s 3-pointer with 6 seconds left in the third quarter gave the hosts a 71-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Jamestown CC made 47 percent of its shots from the field, including 55 percent of its 3-pointers, and didn’t miss a free throw.

The Jayhawks also outrebounded Lorain County CC 51-43 and were credited with 22 assists on their 39 made field goals, many of which came on fast-break layups in the second half.

“They kind of stayed up instead of getting back,” Wells said of the Commodores. “They force you to throw over the top.”

Jamestown CC will return to action Wednesday night at Butler County (Pa.) CC.

“You want to get into a good rhythm,” Wells said of the next five games before the end of the first semester. “It was nice to have a little Thanksgiving break and them come back with that kind of an effort.”

NOTES: Jamestown CC was 39 of 83 (47 percent) from the field, including 11 of 20 (55 percent), from 3-point range while Lorain County CC was 19 of 64 (29.7 percent) from the field, including 4 of 18 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range. … The Commodores committed 25 turnovers while the Jayhawks committed 15.
