Hvizdzak Sets Randolph Record
Junior Pours In 44, Including Eight 3s, To Break Maycock’s Mark Of 42
WESTFIELD — When Mckenna Maycock graduated from Randolph and took her basketball talents down Interstate 86 to St. Bonaventure University, it seems like her Cardinals records would stand for ages.
Almost six years to the day that Maycock set one of those records, current Randolph junior Sydney Hvizdzak has done even better.
Hvizdzak scored a career-high and Randolph record 44 points, including eight 3-pointers, as the Cardinals beat Clymer 63-40 in the opening round of the Westfield Winter Classic on Friday night.
“She was feeling it tonight. They were laying off her a little bit,” Randolph head coach Sean Huntington said. “If she’s on, she’ll hit pretty much anything, and it can be from deep.”
Hvizdzak is now averaging 28.2 points per game through five games this season. During a junior season in which she averaged 30.1 points per game, Maycock scored 42 against Sherman on Dec. 10, 2013, 41 against Salamanca on Jan. 30, 2014 and 41 against Gowanda on Feb. 10, 2014. Maycock also had a 42-point game during her sophomore season against Tapestry on Feb. 28, 2013.
Hvizdzak scored 13 points in the first quarter and 16 more in the second quarter, outscoring the Pirates 29-16 on her own in the first half. After the break, she scored 5 in the third quarter and 10 more in the fourth.
“Even when we set up a couple of out-of-bounds plays, she executed and hit them,” Huntington said. “She had some good drives to the basket and only missed one from the free throw line.”
Hvizdzak also had six rebounds, two steals and an assist in the game.
Payton Morrison chipped in 9 points while Allison Ames had four rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Cardinals (3-2).
Emma Wiggers led Clymer (2-2) with 13 points and Arden Hepler scored 10.

FREWSBURG RALLIES PAST TROJANS
FRANKLINVILLE — Elise Sposato scored 8 of her 12 points and Reagan Chitester scored 6 of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as Frewsburg rallied for a 62-60 win over Southwestern in the opening round of the Rick Hughes Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament on Friday evening.
The Trojans jumped out to a 20-9 lead after eight minutes, but the Bears pulled to within a point, 28-27, at halftime. After again falling behind 47-40 after the third quarter, Frewsburg came back with a 22-13 fourth quarter.
“We went back and forth with them. You kept thinking they would take off, but we just never let them get away,” Frewsburg head coach Jeff Collver said. “I felt like we kept getting stronger as each quarter went along.”
The Bears had the ball with a two-point lead and 11 seconds remaining, but a tie-up after an inbounds play gave the ball back to the Trojans. Despite getting four opportunities to score, Southwestern couldn’t tie the game.
“We couldn’t secure the rebound,” Collver said. “They definitely had some opportunities at the end.”
Mikayla Gabalski-Jones led Frewsburg with 21 points and six steals while Amanda Dilts had eight rebounds and four steals. Ashley Carlson chipped in five assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Gianna Hoose led Southwestern with 24 points.
“She’s so strong,” Collver said of Hoose. “The kids did a great job of doubling down from the wings. Considering we are so undersized, I thought we did a great job.
“The kids played so well.”
Frewsburg will take on Eden in the championship game today at 1:30 p.m.
