Wolfpack Enjoys A ‘SportsCenter’ Moment

Clymer/Sherman/Panama has sure made the most of its gadget plays the last two seasons.

In the 2018 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D championship game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, it was “trips, gun right; rip, hitch and pitch” on fourth-and-21 that transformed the Wolfpack’s tenuous, 7-0, fourth-quarter lead into an improbable touchdown that flipped the momentum like a tidal wave and sent the teenagers from three neighboring communities to a 26-6 victory over Moriah.

The game-changing play began when quarterback Gerrit Hinsdale connected with Cameron Barmore on a 12-yard hitch pattern. Almost simultaneously, John Swabik, streaking up the sideline, took a lateral from Barmore and raced the final 18 yards for the touchdown.

Fast-forward about 49 weeks later.

Leading 7-0 and facing a third-and-7 from its own 31 with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter of last Saturday’s Section VI Class D championship game against Franklinville/Ellicottville at New Era Field, head coach Ty Harper reached into his bag of tricks one more time.

Called “bunch gun right; 28 sweep pass,” the results were just as dramatic as a year earlier.

Hinsdale took the snap from center and pitched the ball to Swabik, who just happens to be a nationally-ranked Junior Olympic decathlete. With a Titans’ defender closing in for an almost certain tackle for loss, Swabik made an athletic spin move and threw deep to Barmore who was all alone at the Titans’ 35. The first-team all-state wideout hauled in the pass and waltzed into the end zone for the touchdown.

The Wolfpack went on to win, 22-0, to advance to Friday’s Far West Regional against Section V Batavia Notre Dame.

“Everything these kids do is crazy,” Harper said.

It got even crazier once the game ended.

Jenna Harper, a sports reporter for News 4 Buffalo, tweeted video of that play, which, of course, drew Harper’s interest.

“I was just scrolling through my Twitter feed and it was unfolding in real time,” he said.

And, ultimately, the video found its way to ESPN, which made the Hinsdale-to-Swabik-to-Barmore connection No. 4 on its Top-10 Plays, which initially aired early Sunday morning. The young men from rural Chautauqua County had their SportsCenter moment.

“It’s surreal,” Harper said. “… In my wildest imagination, I could not have fathomed something like this. I just wanted to coach football. You can’t imagine something like this happening. They just keep delivering. It’s one thing after another.”
