Pietrocarlo Helps Scots To Another Region Title

The Edinboro women’s cross country team made it three straight NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championships on Saturday morning in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.

The Fighting Scots rode the performance of their big three to edge Davis & Elkins and earn a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Sacramento, California on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Edinboro finished with four All-Region performers, including Hope Pietrocarlo (Bemus Point/Maple Grove), and for the second race in a row the Fighting Scots crossed the finish line one-two.

Edinboro totaled 62 points, compared to 68 for David & Elkins. Seton Hill was third with 137 points, while West Chester (153) and Lock Haven (192) rounded out the top five. A total of 22 teams and 153 runners competed in the regional.

Stefanie Parsons completed the double-double as the junior finished as the individual champion after previously winning the PSAC Championships. She covered the 6K course at the West Branch Cross Country Course in a time of 21:02.0 to become an All-Region runner for the third time. Parsons was fourth at the regional as a freshman and 21st a year ago.

Pietrocarlo finished directly behind her teammate for the second straight race, becoming a three-time, All-Region performer with a time of 21:19.6. She was third at last year’s regional.

Mercyhurst University junior Rebecca King (Clymer/Clymer) was recently named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s Women’s Cross Country Champion Scholar.

According to the school’s official athletics website, King received the award at the end of October at the PSAC Women’s Cross Country Championship in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

King is the first women’s cross country runner at Mercyhurst to claim the award.

The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA’s Elite 90 award and honor the student-athlete with the top grade point average who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC’s 23-team championship finals.

King holds a 4.0 cumulative grade point average. She is majoring in early childhood with a focus on special education.

In addition to her impressive performance in the classroom, King was one of only two Mercyhurst runners to place inside the top-50 at the PSAC Women’s Cross Country Championships, finishing 50th with a time of 24:16.8.

Mark Weaver has added another honor to his lengthy martial arts resume.

The 2019 Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame inductee has been nominated for inclusion in the 2019 Martial Arts Masters & Pioneers book and has been inducted into the American Martial Arts Alliance “Who’s Who Legends Hall of Honors.

The induction ceremony and book release were held earlier this year at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. According to “Who’s Who of Martial Arts” press release, the new edition has been redesigned to focus on assisting martial artists market themselves within their communities through use of the autobiography book More than 500 nominations were received, but only 200 ere selected for this honor. The edition features five martials from each state who are considered legends in the art and sport, spanning the past 60 years. Weaver was one of five martial artists from New York selected.

Jaysean Paige, a former Jamestown High School star, is playing for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA G League.

Active in one game so far this season, the 6-foot-2 guard scored 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

The 6-foot-2 guard, who led JHS to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA final four in 2011, completed his college career for West Virginia University. After going undrafted, Paige played in Europe for several teams, including the Newcastle Eagles of the British Basketball League where he was named the Player of the Year for the 2017-18 season.

Sophomore Nash Nelson (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) has performed well recently on the gridiron for SUNY Morrisville.

The Bemus Point native picked off two passes and collected two tackles to help lead the Mustangs to a 56-28 victory over Hartwick College.

At last report, Nelson has made 11 tackles while the Mustangs have played their way to a 4-4 overall record and 2-2 record in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

SUNY Morrisville is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III and administers 17 intercollegiate athletic teams.

Several area student-athletes have helped lead the Alfred University football team to a 5-3 record to this point in the 2019 season.

Senior Wes Senn (Randolph/Randolph), a team captain, has started every game this season for the Saxons at center. The Randolph native started every game for the Saxons in 2018 and 2017 as well.

Caleb Rinko (Great Valley/Ellicottville) has run the ball 16 times for a total of 84 yards in 2019 while finding the endzone once.

Rinko, a senior, has also made nine tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior Ben Burk (Lakewood/Southwestern) has seen time at quarterback, completing 17 of 29 passes for a total of 221 yards and two touchdowns. He’s run the ball 17 times for 115 yards.

Dustin McCaslin (Ashville/Chautauqua Lake) has been nearly automatic on extra points. The sophomore has drilled 26 of 28 attempts and has made three fields goals of 21, 30 and 25 yards.

The Saxons’ roster also includes sophomore Carter Russo (Bemus Point/Maple Grove), junior Austin Pierce (Forestville/Forestville) and freshman Luke Szumigala (Forestville/Forestville).

Canisius College sophomore Michael Peppy (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) was recently named a member of the Metro Atlantic Conference Men’s Cross Country All-Academic Team.

A total of nine student-athletes from the Canisius men’s team received the honor while a total of 183 student-athletes were named to the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country All-Academic teams.

To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at his/her institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Peppy is majoring in biology/pre-med.
