EDEN — Amanda Dilts’ next loss will be her last.

The Frewsburg senior made sure it didn’t come Saturday.

Dilts drilled a penalty kick into the top corner of the net in the 10th round of a shootout to eliminate No. 3 Westfield/Brocton and send the fifth-seeded Bears into next Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C girls soccer Far West Regional.

“You can’t put words to the feeling right now, honestly. Every game that we keep going is amazing,” Dilts said. “I never thought it would come down to me.”

“For her to finish it like that,” Frewsburg head coach Scott Stone said of Dilts, “there’s probably not a better player to finish it off at this point.”

It was the culmination of a wild, wacky evening at William Bos Field that featured everything but an actual goal.

Neither team broke through during 80 minutes of regulation time, a pair of 10-minute overtime periods or two five-minute “Golden Goal” overtime sessions.

“They are a good soccer team, they play well and they have a lot of good athletes,” Stone said. “We are very similar. They play great defense, they’re dangerous up top. We are a little deeper, they don’t sub as much. … That’s been our goal all year, wear teams down.”

The game started during a cool evening in the Southtowns before conditions deteriorated into a driving, sideways rain. By the time it was over, both teams walked off the field as co-Section VI champions with a rain-snow mix falling and the temperatures hovering in the mid-30s.

“This is probably the coldest I’ve ever been coaching a soccer game. When we start in August and it’s 90 degrees and everybody is sweating, worried about the heat index, we constantly tell the girls, ‘If you want to win a championship, you’re going to have do it in weather like it was tonight,'” Stone said. “We prepare for it, we practice in it whenever we can, and we stood up tonight.

” … Girls were coming off crying, their feet were numb … I had girls not wanting to shoot PKs because they couldn’t feel their legs or their fingers,” Stone added. “Just the mental toughness of not only my players, but the Westfield players as well, credit to every girl that played out in that game tonight.”

By reaching the shootout, both teams were named Section VI champs. For Frewsburg, it is the first sectional championship since 2011 while for Westfield/Brocton, it is the first in program history.

“I’m proud of my girls,” Wolverines head coach Neil Huber said on his way to the bus.

While 110 minutes couldn’t distinguish which was the better team, the penalty-kick shootout didn’t do a much better job.

All 10 shooters converted in the first five rounds with the Bears’ Kendal Sohl, Ava Hultberg, Reagan Chitester, Rachael Kerhli and Nora Edwards answering the Wolverines’ Sheala Barresi, Laura Johnston, Haleigh Dellow, Katie Bodenmiller and Angel Busch goal for goal.

“I feel like we’re the favorites. We have a pretty good goaltender in Madison. We have been in that situation,” said Stone, whose Bears beat Holland in PKs in the quarterfinals. “We just won in PKs the other day. Any time my group gets to PKs, we definitely feel like we should come out on top.”

After the first five shooters, the teams began matching each other round after round.

First, Westfield/Brocton’s Makartnee Mortimer and Frewsburg’s Alex Hultberg found the back of the net.

Next, the goalkeepers stepped up with Madison Voty making a stop for the Bears and Busch making a save for the Wolverines.

Makena Barresi then scored high into the middle of the net for Westfield/Brocton before Emma Edwards buried a shot to Busch’s left.

“We just have to go for it and hope for the best,” Dilts said of the penalty kicks. “We practiced it a lot.”

After a Wolverines’ player mishit a shot that didn’t find the range, the Bears’ next attempt glanced off the crossbar above Busch.

Westfield/Brocton’s next attempt then missed high above the goal leaving it up to Dilts in the bottom half of the 10th round.

“She has just been amazing all year long. She’s done everything we’ve asked of her,” Stone said of Dilts. “She’s played amazing soccer from Day 1 and she’s become a leader, always supporting the girls. She was the one on the bench after every overtime getting the girls together just to say, ‘Keep fighting.'”

The four-year varsity player with just one goal on the season and two in her career confidently walked to the line and beat Busch to clinch a spot in Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. regional at Williamsville East High School against a Section V champion yet to be determined.

“We’ve been working toward this game for five years. I’ve told these girls since they were 10 years old when I started coaching them that we were going to be champions and our goal was to go to the state tournament,” said Stone, who is also president of the Frewsburg Soccer Club. “We’re going to enjoy the heck out of this win right now, but we are not done. We have one more game. We want to go to the state tournament.”

NOTES: Marion and Warsaw will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Honeoye Falls-Lima to decide the Section V representative in Saturday’s game. … In other Section VI finals Saturday: Hamburg topped North Tonawanda 3-0 in Class A1, Grand Island beat Amherst 2-0 in Class A2, Iroquois beat City Honors 6-2 in Class B1, Allegany-Limestone beat Wilson 7-0 in Class B2.
