Jamestown Takes Care Of Frontier In Class AA

Jamestown took care of business Friday night.

Jaylen Butera rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns, Demarri Jones ran for two TDs and Trey Drake passed for 130 yards and one score to lead the top-seeded Red Raiders to a 49-7 victory over No. 8 Frontier in a Section VI Class AA quarterfinal football game at Strider Field.

The win advances Jamestown (7-1) into the semifinals next Friday against No. 5 Lancaster (6-2), a 23-17 winner over No. 4 Clarence (5-3). That game is scheduled for 7 p.m., back on Martin Road.

It figures to be quite a matchup.

“Lancaster is the three-time defending champion,” Red Raiders coach Tom Langworthy said. “That’s a great motivator for us.”

The Red Raiders’ Elijah Rojas celebrates a touchdown.

As close as next week’s game figures to be, last night’s contest was the polar opposite.

The Red Raiders scored touchdowns on all five of its first-half possessions — runs of 7, 2 and 10 yards by Butera, a 1-yard plunge by Savon VanSickle, and a 26-yard Drake-to-Elijah Rojas pass — and their defense did the rest.

Outside of Vinnie Monaco’s 3-yard TD run, which was set up by Jack Novack’s 55-yard burst, the Falcons were kept out of the end zone. Jamestown tacked on two third-quarter TDs courtesy of Jones’ 15- and 3-yard runs, giving it more than enough cushion to advance to next week’s semifinal.

“I thought we played a good game. I thought we ran the ball effectively, threw the ball effectively and played solid defense,” Langworthy said, “but it’s no time to rest on our laurels. It’s time to get back to work (today).”

In a division in which the difference between the top six teams is, according to Langworthy, “razor thin,” the Red Raiders will enter next week’s game against the Legends with similar numbers. Lancaster is averaging 35 points per game, while allowing 14. By comparison, Jamestown is averaging 34 points per outing, while yielding 18.

Last night, it appeared that the Falcons might get on the scoreboard first as Ryan Bukaty returned the opening kickoff to the Red Raiders’ 7-yard line, but the next three plays from scrimmage netted minus-17 yards, and Austin Lippert’s 30-yard field goal was no good.

Jamestown responded with an 80-yard scoring drive, highlighted by VanSickle’s 27-yard run, and capped by Butera’s 7-yard burst. Andrew Dix booted the first of his seven successful point-after tries to give the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

Frontier responded with a scoring drive of its own on its ensuing possession. Novak’s 55-yard run set up Monaco’s TD, and when Lippert’s extra-point try was good, the Falcons pulled even, 7-7, with 4:19 remaining in the opening period.

After that, it was all Red Raiders, who surpassing the 40-point mark for the second time this season.

NOTES: The trio of Butera (119 yards on 14 carries), VanSickle (67 yards on 10 carries) and Jones (51 yards on six carries) combined for 237 yards on the ground and six touchdowns; Rojas had five catches for 90 yards and another score; and Simeon Leeper had four receptions for 40 yards. … Defensively, Chase Jones led the way with seven tackles, Drayce Garland had six, and Markell Carter and Demarri Jones both had five. … Cam’Ron Mays intercepted two passes and VanSickle added one pick. … In a pregame ceremony, Jamestown Public Schools and the Red Raiders’ football family recognized 2019 valedictorian Finley Holt. A four-year member of the program, Holt recently completed boot camp for the United States Marine Corps. The son of David and Mary Beth Holt, Finley will serve as a reservist while he attends Case Western Reserve University where he will be studying aeronautical engineering. … In the other Class AA score from last night, No. 2 Orchard Park (7-1) defeated No. 7 Hutch Tech, 41-6. … No. 3 Bennett takes on No. 6 Niagara Falls today.
