Wolverines Survive Test From Trojans
WESTFIELD — Westfield/Brocton faced a tough nonleague opponent in Southwestern on Saturday morning at the NorthLake Family Recreation Center.
The game was the annual Kevin White memorial game. White was a 2006 graduate of Westfield, who died in the line of duty while serving in the military.
The Wolverines put forth a full effort to honor their alum, and walked away with a 1-0 victory. The victory keeps the Wolverines undefeated on the year, claiming their 11th win.
Westfield/Brocton came ready to play early and controlled much of the possession in Southwestern’s end of the field. Despite the early ball control and threats, Westfield/Brocton could not connect for a goal during that stretch. Southwestern came down the field quickly on the counterattack and recorded the first shot of the game in the eighth minute with Max Vaughn pushing the ball onto the net while being closely defended.
The Wolverines responded with an attack of their own. They kept the pressure up and took advantage of a mistake by the Trojans in the 11th minute. Southwestern played the ball back to the goalkeeper where he had a hard touch and the ball went to Westfield’s Nate Culbreth, who fended off his defender to gain a quality position. He gently placed the ball into the open net as the keeper was out of position.
“The early goal helped us keep control of the game,” Westfield/Brocton head coach Jared Winder said. “We came out strong and continued to do a solid job defensively playing with the lead.”
Westfield/Brocton continued to keep the pressure going after the goal. In the 21st minute, Cole Holland placed a perfect cross to a teammate who placed the ball on goal with the shot being deflected out by keeper Declan Brown. Shortly after, Joshua Heim had a kick that went slightly wide of the net. Gabe Morello followed with a deep strike that was saved by the goalkeeper.
Southwestern had a golden chance in the last minute of the half as McKay Young made a deep run to get a strike from the wide angle of the net, which was turned away by Mike Johnson.
“We needed to play a better first half and match their intensity,” Southwestern head coach Jason Deering said. “We did not make quality passes and could not gain control of the ball. Westfield(/Brocton) is a tough team and they are always in great position to limit their opponents’ chances as shown in their results this year.”
The second half saw many momentum changes as both teams had chances early in the half. Southwestern kept possession in the first two minutes, followed by Westfield/Brocton having a few chances of its own that did not hit the net. Southwestern then responded with a deep run and was awarded with a corner kick. On the corner, Southwestern placed a ball into the box, but it was headed away by Holland and sent down the field by Connor Dispense.
“We did a much better job in the second half, even though we could not get one past their goalie,” Deering said. “There is a reason why Westfield(/Brocton) is undefeated. They have a great defense with no weaknesses. We continued with our normal game plan, and did a great job with the runs out wide. When we are clicking with the offense, we can be a dangerous team.”
The Trojans kept up the momentum late and had many chances to tie the game. In the 74th minute, a free kick by Vaughn was deflected in the box, but Johnson was able to adjust and make the save. Southwestern played more aggressively trying to score the tying goal, but Westfield/Brocton had all 11 players getting back on defense to limit any threat by the Trojans.
“Southwestern definitely turned it up in the second half and we adjusted late,” Winder said. “However, we still continued to do the small things right by communicating. If someone stepped up, they would get replaced. Our midfield did a great job getting back along with our forwards. We focus not to be stuck on one side of the field. Overall, this was a great game by both teams with a great defensive exhibition that limited the other teams’ offense chances.”
Mike Johnson made five saves for the Wolverines while Declan Brown recorded four saves for the Trojans. Winder also wanted to give credit to Cooper Harris on his efforts in the game.
“Cooper has been fighting to earn every minute of playing time this season,” Winder said. “He had the opportunity to step in due to injuries and had a solid effort on both sides of the ball.”
Westfield/Brocton puts its undefeated record on the line again Monday against Silver Creek in the Wolverines’ Senior Night.
