Saxons, Burk Off To 2-0 Start

Ben Burk (Southwestern/Lakewood) and the Alfred Saxons are off to a 2-0 start, topping Thiel College, 42-0, in Week 1 before edging George Fox University, 15-14, last week.

Burk was 7 of 8 for 71 yards and a score in the season opener while also running six times for 98 yards.

Last week, Burk rushed four times for 12 yards and completed one pass. Alfred will travel to meet Ithaca College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Alyson Edwards (Jamestown/Jamestown) and the Penn State Behrend women’s tennis team are off to a 1-3 start. Edwards helped her team to an 8-1 win over Pitt-Greensburg on Sept. 7. Edwards defeated Xianting Tang, 6-1, 6-1.

Brooke Federko (Jamestown/Jamestown) and the Buffalo State women’s volleyball team are out to a 3-8 start this year.

Federko has 16.5 points, nine kills, a team-high 301 assists seven service aces, 111 digs and one block.

In a loss to SUNY Fredonia, Federko finished with two kills, 33 assists, one ace and 12 digs.

Buffalo State will look to snap a three-game skid with a tri-match on Saturday at Utica.

Hannah Lillie (Southwestern/Lakewood) and the Gannon University women’s cross country team finished in eighth place at the Division II/III Challenge in Kutztown, Pa. last Saturday. The freshman ran a 27:22.3, and will now travel with the team to the Lock Haven Invite on Saturday.

Nick Mole (Frewsburg/Jamestown) and the Pitt-Bradford golf team started their year with a win at the Pitt-Bradford Invitational. The Panthers shot the lowest score in program history of 299, with Mole carding an 81. The Panthers have two firsts, a second and a fourth-place finish in their first four matches, and will be at the Penn-State Altoona Invitational on Saturday.

Hope Pietrocarlo (Maple Grove, Bemus Point) is off to a good start in her junior season at Edinboro University. After earning All-American honors last season, Pietrocarlo ran a 22:44 at the Doug Watts Open on Sept. 7. The Fighting Scots finished third out of 11 teams with 91 points, and will be in action at the Lock Haven Invite this Saturday.

Clay Scanlan (Gowanda/Gowanda) was drafted 30th overall in the second round of the National Lacrosse League Draft. Scanlan has seven goals and 28 assists in 19 games played with the Six Nations Arrows this season.

Elise Swanson (Maple Grove/Bemus Point) and the Houghton women’s tennis team are 2-4 to start the year.

In Wednesday’s loss to Nazareth, Swanson and Catie Moore were 8-6 winners over Brooke Murphy and Maelah Nadeau at No. 1 doubles. Swanson dropped her match at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, to Nadeau.

In a Sept. 14 win over Utica, Swanson topped Sara Gribanoff, 6-0, 3-0, at No. 1 singles and joined Moore once again for an 8-4 win over Gribanoff and Morgan Willis at No. 1 doubles.

Houghton will take on The Sage Colleges this Saturday at noon.

Gaven Johnson, son of 1996 Jamestown High School graduate Chris Johnson and grandson of Pat & Lee Johnson of Jamestown, was invited to attend the U.S. Soccer Youth National Team Identification Center earlier this week in Obetz, Ohio.

Gaven is a member of the U14 Cincinnati (Ohio) United Premier DA team.

According to U.S. Soccer, the identification centers are free, single-day player identification opportunities for top talents to train and play games under the direction of U.S. Soccer Talent Identification managers. The centers are a critical element to U.S. Soccer’s talent identification plan and are designed to identify and evaluate talents for youth national teams.
