JCC Goes 2-4 At Volleyball Invite In Ohio

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Jamestown Community College ended its participation in the Owens CC Invitational on Sunday by splitting a pair of matches to finish the weekend with a 2-4 record.

“As far as an experience, I can’t replace that with anything else we’ve ever done,” Jayhawks coach Ashley Lund said after posting a win over Schoolcraft (Michigan) College and falling to McHenry County (Illinois) College. “We’re only walking away with two wins on the weekend, but it really changes how we’re going to play during the season.”

In yesterday’s first match against Schoolcraft, Jenna Caskey collected nine aces, four kills and 11 digs to pace Jamestown CC to a dominant 25-7, 25-13, 25-12 victory.

Karleigh Haines had six aces, nine kills and seven digs; Maddy Russo had 23 assists, one kill and five digs; Cameryn Hawkins added one ace and 15 digs; and Alexys Marsh chipped in five kills and two blocks.

“Our serving was very strong, we didn’t miss many serves, we were very effective with that,” Lund said. “We were actually passing and digging, and that was one our struggles the rest of the weekend.”

In the second match, the Jayhawks fell, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18, to McHenry County.

“At some point in all three of those games, we had the lead,” Lund said. “We played very well against them, but we couldn’t close.”

Caskey finished the second match of the day with three aces, seven kills, six digs and one block; Haines had five kills, 12 digs and three blocks; Megan Gominiak had two aces, six kills and three blocks; Russo added one ace, 20 assists, one kill and two digs; and Hawkins had an ace and 15 digs.

On Saturday, the Jayhawks won their first match, downing Erie CC, 25-13, 25-21, 25-13, before falling to Hagerstown CC, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16.

Highlighting Jamestown CC’s victory against the Kats were Caskey with six aces, 13 kills and eight digs; Haines with one ace, eight kills and five digs; Russo with four aces, 30 assists, two kills and five digs; Marsh with two assists, six kills, one dig and one block; and Megan Gominiak with eight kills.

In their loss to Hagerstown, the Jayhawks were led by Caskey with one ace, eight kills, seven digs and two blocks; Haines with one ace, nine kills, 12 digs and one block; Russo with one ace, 20 assists and eight digs; Jennah Starkweather with four kills, one dig and two blocks; and Hawkins with one ace and 18 digs.
