Champs Go Down

Franklinville/Ellicottville Ends Wolfpack’s 15-Game Streak

ELLICOTTVILLE — Jason Marsh gathered his Franklinville/Ellicottville players at one end of Ray Gray Memorial Field on Friday night and, among several postgame musings, he offered them this piece of advice:

“It’s all about creating memories,” Marsh said.

For one evening anyway, the Titans did just that.

Junior quarterback Logan Frank passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and Franklinville/Ellicottville, the state’s sixth-ranked team, dominated the second half on its way to a 24-8 victory over No. 1 Clymer/Sherman/Panama.

The win raised the Titans’ record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Class D, while the Wolfpack, the defending state champs, saw their 15-game winning streak snapped and fell to 2-1 and 1-1.

“Our confidence is really high,” Marsh said. “I think there was a question mark what we were really made of, and this was a good test for both teams. We fared pretty well, but we know we have a long way to go yet and we still have some growth to do.”

It will be scary if Frank gets any better.

All told, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder rushed for 142 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown, while completing 4 of 6 passes for 50 yards and two more TDs. Toss in a defense that limited the Pirates to 4 yards on the ground and forced three turnovers, and it was no wonder that Marsh was pretty happy during his postgame chat.

Meanwhile, Clymer/Sherman/Panama quarterback Gerrit Hinsdale completed 16 of 34 passes for 166 yards and a 1-yard TD toss to Matthew White on the third play of the second quarter, but that was the only time the Wolfpack found paydirt.

But they had their opportunities for more.

On its first drive, Clymer/Sherman/Panama used a 44-yard Hinsdale-to-John Swabik pass to set up a first and goal at the 4-yard line, but its next three plays netted three yards and Hinsdale’s fourth-down pass was incomplete.

It was that kind of night for the Wolfpack offensively.

“Anytime you get the ball in the red zone you have to finish, and that’s on me,” Wolfpack coach Ty Harper said. “I’ve got to do a better job getting us into formations that are going to put points on the board.”

Conversely, it was a special night for Frank. A week after a stellar performance in a win over Randolph, he was the best player on the field last night.

“He’s very athletic. We knew coming in that he was going to be a handful,” Harper said. ” … We knew what he could do with his legs. I was impressed with his ability to throw the ball under pressure.”

That was evident on the Titans’ possession after the fourth-down defensive stop, as Frank directed a 99-yard drive, capped by a 25-yard scoring strike to Tyler Clear on fourth-and-17. Frank then connected with Clayton Rowland on the 2-point conversion pass to stake Franklinville/Ellicottville to an 8-0 lead with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter.

The Wolfpack responded immediately with a 60-yard scoring drive, capped by Hinsdale’s short toss to White for the TD. Hinsdale’s two-point conversion pass to Cameron Barmore was successful, and the game was tied, 8-8, a minute into the second period.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s final two possessions in the first half ended in turnovers, including a pick in the end zone.

After intermission, it was all Franklinville/Ellicottville.

In fact, the Titans, who outgained the Wolfpack, 367-170 and led in time of possession (33:25-14:35), needed only five plays on the opening possession of the third quarter to find the end zone. The drive was highlighted by a 15-yard run by Tyler Clear, a 24-yard burst by Frank, and Frank’s 25-yard TD pass to Clear. Frank’s two-point conversion pass to Clayton Rowland was successful to extend the hosts’ lead to 16-8.

After forcing a Wolfpack punt, Franklinville/Ellicottville marched 80 yards in 10 plays, all on the ground. Frank capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge. His two-point conversion pass to Rowland was successful again, pushing the Titans’ lead to 24-8 with 2:42 remaining in the third period.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama never threatened to score the rest of the game.

NOTES: Clear rushed for 92 yards on 12 carries and Jordan Grinols added 56 on 10 trips for the Titans. … Defensively, they were led by Frank with six tackles, Matt Peters with 4.5 and Wyatt Chudy with four. … Alex Dunnewold was credited with seven tackles, Barmore had 6.5, and Jordan Svetz and Lucas Rater each had six to pace the Wolfpack. … Barmore caught six passes for 71 yards and Zavon Overton had five receptions for 30 yards. … Overton also averaged 42.3 yards on four punts. … The Titans entertain JFK next Friday, while the Wolfpack host Cattaraugus-Little Valley a week from today.
