Falconer Advances With Class C Win Over Barker

FALCONER — Ben Schrader and Matt Gullotti combined on a one-hitter to lift No. 4 Falconer to a 6-1 victory over No. 13 Barker in a Section VI Class C prequarterfinal baseball game.

Schrader worked the first five innings, struck out four and gave up one hit before giving way to Gullotti, who fanned two and walked two over the final two frames.

“We knew we were going to limit pitches to keep them fresh,” Falconer coach Chris Schrader said. “Ben pitched effectively and we got Matt a couple innings to get some things worked out. They both did a really nice job today.”

Bobby Samuelson led the Golden Falcons (14-4) with two hits, including a double; and Mark Wilcox belted a triple. The victory sets up a quarterfinal matchup against No. 12 Cassadaga Valley, which knocked off No. 5 Randolph, 3-1, in another prequarterfinal Friday.

Barker finishes the season 2-17.

KNIGHTS WIN IN LAST AT-BAT

SILVER CREEK — Spencer Harford’s single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled Silver Creek to a 4-3 walk-off victory over Westfield in Class C prequarterfinal play.

Trailing 2-0, No. 11 Westfield scored all of its runs in the seventh inning. The sixth-seeded Black Knights topped that with two in their final at-bat.

Silver Creek broke the scoreless tie in the third inning. Andre Rosario started off the rally with a single. After Chris VanCheri walked, Nick Dawley moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout. Jeremy Wilcox followed with an RBI on a groundball as Rosario beat the throw home. Later in the inning, VanCheri scored on a wild pitch.

Westfield put together a rally in the seventh inning to take the lead. Matt See and Mike Johnson were both hit by a pitch. Dylan Scriven reached on an error, which brought in See for the Wolverines’ first run of the game. After Bret Babcock was intentionally walked to load the bases, Colby Bills added an RBI single to tie the game. The ball was misplayed in the outfield, which brought Scriven around to score.

Silver Creek then made a heads-up play on a ground ball as the throw went home for a perfectly placed tag from VanCheri.

The Black Knights followed with a rally of their own in the bottom half of the inning. No. 8 hitter Luke Zbytek took a free pass and Rosario followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position with no outs.

VanCheri was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and a wild pitch scored a run. After a strikeout, an intentional walk to Jeremy Wilcox loaded the bases before Harford took advantage of his opportunity.

DEPEW KNOCKS OUT FREDONIA

FREDONIA — Depew’s Josh Goss threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout with three strikeouts as the fifth-seeded Wildcats defeated No. 4 Fredonia, 6-0, in Class B1 quarterfinal action.

The loss snapped a streak of eight straight years Fredonia has played for a sectional title.

Fredonia’s Trey Swartz threw the first three innings, allowing three runs. Nick Whitfield pitched the next three innings before Anthony Gullo pitched a scoreless seventh.

Depew scored twice in the second inning and once in the third. After Whitfield walked a pair and hit a batter in the sixth, a pair of two-out hits from the top of the Depew order resulted in three runs.

Swartz finished his Fredonia career with a double to right field in his final at-bat. It was the Hillbillies’ only extra-base hit on the day.

GATORS OUST SOUTHWESTERN

ALLEGANY — A two-run first inning and a four-run sixth helped No. 3 Allegany-Limestone eliminate No. 6 Southwestern from the Section VI Class B2 playoffs Friday with a 6-3 quarterfinal victory at Stayer Park.

Ethan Paul threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and four walks. The Trojans sent the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but a groundout ended the game.

Ben Giardini was 2 for 3 with an RBI while Travis Maguire had a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning for the Gators, who will travel to No. 2 Gowanda in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Mitchell Pascarella threw a complete game and struck out nine while hitting two batters for Southwestern. Aidan Melquist was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Nate Johnson had an RBI double and Pascarella doubled in the loss.
