Brink’s Single Sends Bears To Win

FREWSBURG — Senior Nolan Brink kept Frewsburg’s hopes of a league title alive with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Bears beat Ellicottville, 5-4, in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 East action Friday at the Robert H. Jackson Athletic Complex.

Frewsburg improved to 9-6 overall and, more importantly, 7-2 in the league heading into a matchup at Franklinville this morning.

No. 9 hitter Caleb Carr opened the bottom of the seventh with a walk and moved to third on Aaron Hair’s one-out single. Nick Marsh then walked to load the bases before Carr scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

On a 2-2 count, Brink singled to right field and Hair scored from third with the winning run.

Ellicottville had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh as Lucas Marsh reached on an error and scored on Clayton Rowland’s RBI single.

Hair finished 3 for 4 with a double and Jason Dustin was 2 for 3 with a double while Jack Yost and Kaleb Bender also doubled for the Bears. Yost threw six innings and struck out four while walking two and not allowing an earned run.

Kalib Pierce doubled and scored a run for Ellicottville. Marsh threw six innings and struck out six while walking one and allowing three runs.

RED DRAGONS WIN IN 11

BROCTON — It took 11 innings, but Maple Grove wrapped up a perfect league season with a 5-2 win over Brocton in Division 2 West play Friday.

After a pair of strikeouts to open the 11th inning, Taige Jones drew a walk and Daren Vaillancourt hit a single for the Red Dragons (9-3, 8-0). Ayden Reagle then hit an RBI single to score Jones before both Vaillancourt and Reagle scored on a passed ball after an errant throw to the pitcher covering home plate.

The Bulldogs (5-5, 5-2) put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh inning, but freshman Tucker Fenton sealed the game with a pair of strikeouts before a line out to first base.

Vaillancourt started for Maple Grove and threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out 11. Fenton pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, striking out seven while allowing just one hit and a walk.

Brocton took a 1-0 lead in the first as Riley Rivera reached on an error and scored on a Jordan Krystofiak RBI single.

The Red Dragons made it 2-1 in the fourth as Easton Tanner doubled and scored on Trevor Hudson’s RBI single. Kyle Trim followed with another RBI single.

In the Bulldogs’ seventh, Derrick Burns singled and scored on a Rivera RBI single.

Ronald “Bubba” Brown threw the first six innings, striking out 12 while allowing four hits and two walks for Brocton. Nick Putcher threw the final five innings, striking out eight while allowing three hits and three walks. Rivera and Krystofiak each had two hits.

FALCONER WINS AGAIN

FALCONER — Nate Abbey and Bobby Samuelson combined on a two-hitter as Falconer downed Cassadaga Valley, 7-1, in a Division 1 West game.

Abbey worked the first five innings, surrendering the Cougars’ only hits in the first inning, and struck out five. Samuelson came on in relief and struck out a pair in the final two frames.

Leading the offensive attack for the Golden Falcons (12-3, 8-3) were Abbey and Nick Saeger with two hits apiece, while teammate Ben Schrader smacked a double.

Adam Goot and Braden LeBaron both had a single for the Cougars (1-13, 0-11).

The Golden Falcons return to action today with a 10 a.m. home game against Fredonia.

NEAL PLAYS HERO FOR TROJANS

LAKEWOOD — Jace Neal had a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Southwestern the lead in a 6-4 nonleague win over Westfield.

Jed Hirliman threw the first four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out three for the Trojans (12-6, 7-5). Luke Tota threw the final three innings, allowing two hits and three unearned runs while striking out one.

Mitchell Pascarella hit a sacrifice fly in the early innings for Southwestern, which stranded 14 runners on base.

The Wolverines scored three runs in the fifth inning on a pair of errors, a sacrifice bunt and a Colby Bills RBI single.

CHAPMAN QUIETS PANTHERS

FRANKLINVILLE — Randolph was a 4-2 winner over Franklinville (8-4, 6-3) in Division 2 East action.

Tommy Chapman led the winners on the hill with eight strikeouts and two walks while Josh Brown led the offense with three hits (double) and Kyle Smallback added two singles in the win.

Ben Mooney fanned six and walked two for Franklinville and Zack Wolfer belted two singles in the loss.

COLBURN THROWS SIX-HITTER

CATTARAUGUS — Salamanca topped Cattaraugus-Little Valley (3-13, 0-9) 7-0 in CCAA Division 1 East play as Andrew Colburn fired a six-strikeout, three-walk two-hitter on the hill.

Harley Hoag smacked a single and a triple and Lucas McKenna a double in the win while Sam Grey fanned six and walked two for the Timberwolves.
