Cable Hollow To Host 30th ‘Champions’ June 2

In 1990, Jim Riggs’ dream to recognize the men’s scratch club champions from all of the regulation 18- and nine-hole courses in The Post-Journal circulation area first came to fruition in the form of The Post-Journal Champions.

And to this day, the tournament continues to thrive on an annual basis.

In fact, when some of the top golfers that the area has to offer tee it up on Sunday, June 2 at Cable Hollow Golf Course in Russell, Pennsylvania, it will mark the 30th edition of the event, which is now known as the Jim Riggs Memorial Champions.

Riggs, the longtime Post-Journal sports editor, passed away in 2016 after a courageous battle with plasma-cell leukemia. Within days of his death, the decision was made to honor Riggs’ memory by assigning his name to the tournament.

Last year’s winner was Nolan Ditcher, who fired a 3-under par 68 when the event was held at Jackson Valley Golf Club.

The Post-Journal will be contacting the club champions shortly to confirm their availability for this year’s tournament.

The players’ greens fees and a light meal after nine holes will be compliments of Cable Hollow. They will also receive a sleeve of golf balls from The Post-Journal, which will also present silver bowls to the champion and runner-up.
