Lakers Teams Have Strong Starts At State Tournament

BUFFALO — The Jamestown Lakers put together strong performances at the New York State Amateur Hockey Association Tier III Championships on Friday.

After giving up a goal in the first minute of play, the 18U Lakers cruised to a 6-1 win over Onondaga.

Matt Welker lit the lamp for the Thunder early, but the Lakers responded with two goals each by Jackson Knupp and Blade Ellis.

Ben Bloomquist and Drake Bell also finished with goals while Knupp and Thomas Lucks both had two assists, and Ellis, Jacob Gerace, Lucian Talbett and Luke DePonceau added one apiece.

Tommy Chapman stopped 22 shots in that win, and Jamestown will now play South Westchester at 10 a.m. today at Northtown Center.

16U

The Lakers earned a 4-2 win over Palisades in their first contest of the weekend.

Jackob Guimond put Jamestown up 1-0 off feeds by Cooper Bergman and Jed Hirliman, but the Predators were able to return fire with a goal early in the second.

The Lakers collected the next three tallies as Tristan Spillane, Jed Hirliman and Trenton Shutters all lit the lamp while Brendan Hirliman picked up an assist.

Goaltender Jackson Yost was credited with 11 saves in the win and the Lakers will now face Bedford at 10 a.m. today at Cornerstone Arena.

14U

The Lakers were 5-2 winners over Cicero in their first game, thanks to a pair of goals by Jack Wells and three assists from Griffen Bogdanowicz.

Jamestown scored five straight goals through the first two periods with Alex MacCallum, Wade Daniels and Maxx Yehl all lighting the lamp in addition to a pair from Wells.

Lucas Lisciandro and Lucas Gilbert also had assists in the win while Collin Norlander turned away 21 shots.

Jamestown now meets South Westchester at 8 a.m. today at the Northtown Center.

12U

The Lakers also had a dominant start to the tournament, trouncing Oswego 8-2.

Liam Nickerson finished that win with a hat trick while Ritter Coombs added a goal and three assists.

Jameson Walsh added two goals and a helper in the win while Nash Luther and Kyler Wojtowicz also found the back of the net, with Brooke Shutters adding two assists. Wojtowicz, Mason Lobb and Parker Norlander also dished out helpers in the win while Logan Degnan finished with 20 saves in net.

In their second game of the day the Lakers suffered a 14-1 loss to Pelham, with Walsh scoring the lone goal off an assist from Coombs.

Degnan recorded 30 saves in that loss, and Jamestown will now play Ogdensburg at 2:15 p.m. today inside Cornerstone Arena.
