Panama, the No. 2 seed, was able to weather an 11-point run by Lucas Willink at the start of the fourth quarter in Monday evening’s Section VI Class D boys basketball semifinal, eventually riding the hot hand of Cameron Barmore down the stretch to a 65-49 win over No. 3 Clymer at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Jamestown Community College.

Willink’s run, which pulled the Pirates (14-8) out of an offensive slump and brought the contest to within seven points, was promptly responded to by six straight points from Barmore as part of a 30-point, 12-rebound effort that included three blocks, four steals and three assists.

“You want to know what was working for us? Cameron Barmore,” said Panama coach Ed Nelson after the win. “It came to that second half and we thought we were struggling a little bit offensively. We made an effort go down low and throw him some post-entry passes (and) he kind of went to work. A little bit cold in that first half, but he went to work in that second half.”

Fifteen of Barmore’s 30 points came at the free-throw line as the junior star made all nine of his attempts from the charity stripe in the final period.

The victory earned Panama (16-6) a date with the winner of today’s 8:15 p.m. contest between No. 1 Franklinville and No. 5 Forestville.

The Panthers’ Mitchell Hovey, left, rises above the Pirates’ Zavon Overton for jump shot.

Through the early going Clymer was able to force the Panthers into a defensive battle, as the Pirates took a 7-4 lead on the back of inside buckets from Willink and Hunter Wassink as well as a 3-pointer by Robert Overton.

Gerrit Hinsdale then pulled Panama back to even with a long-range bucket of his own, but the opening quarter of play would come to a close favoring the Pirates by two as Willink and Lucas Beckerink found more success with underneath finishes.

In the early minutes of the second quarter, Panama earned its first solid lead of the night as Barmore hit home on back-to-back jumpers in close while Mitch Hovey added another two off an inside bucket.

“We got in a little bit of foul trouble there in the first half when Willink went out,” said Clymer coach Ed White. “That kind of hurt us, because he’s been a big help all season for us offensively, and also he is my big guy on the inside defending against Cam. I’ll give it to those guys. They did a nice job of finding their open men tonight, especially on the inside. They went strong at the hoop and they did a nice job of finishing near the basket.”

Panama extended its seven-point halftime lead in a big way in the third quarter.

Hovey was able to hit home on a 3 while Barmore and Ryan Joslyn were able to earn opportunities at the free-throw line by drawing contact in the paint.

“They’ve got a lot of good basketball players. They have Zavon (Overton) and Willink, and Beckerink does a great job running the show up top,” Nelson said of Clymer. “They can knock perimeter shots down and they are a good basketball team. They are tough to defend. You can only hold them down so long you know. We bounced back. That is going to happen. Basketball is a game of runs.”

NOTES: Willink’s night included a team-high 23 points, four rebounds and two blocks while Beckerink added six points, five rebounds and five assists. … Robert Overton finished with 13 points for the Pirates. … Hinsdale would supplement Barmore’s big night with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Hovey grabbed 11 points and dished out four assists.
