NORTH EAST, Pa. — Failures at the foul line were costly for the Jamestown Community men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon.

The Jayhawks shot just 26 of 45 from the charity stripe and fell in overtime to Mercyhurst North East, 81-73, in an NJCAA Region 3 Division 2 game.

The loss dropped Jamestown CC’s record to 10-10 overall and 1-4 in Region 3 Division II, while the Saints snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 11-11 overall.

Tyler Williams had 23 points, Mario Angenor had 18 and Tahjmere Jones added 12 for Mercyhurst North East, which defeated the Jayhawks, 72-62, last month.

Jamestown CC was led by Marcus Heard with 14 points, while Jared Fish, Nate Pelissier and Kenneth Jernigan Jr. had 10 apiece.

The Saints led, 31-29, at halftime, and the game was tied, 65-all, at the end of regulation. The Saints outscored the Jayhawks, 16-8, in the overtime to complete the regular-season sweep.

“Free throws and turnovers,” lamented Jamestown CC interim coach Xavier Churnac. “We have to find a way to value the ball better and make our free throws. … We had plenty of chances to win the game. If we make half our free throws, we probably win.”

Both teams shot 42 percent from the field, but Mercyhurst North was marginally better at the foul line (24 of 37) in a game that featured 54 personal fouls.

Jamestown CC looks to end its two-game losing streak on Wednesday when it travels to Erie CC.
