RANDOLPH — Sparked by a 20-3 second-half surge, Randolph downed Salamanca, 49-35, in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East basketball game to secure Coach Kevin Hind’s 300th career victory.

The win improved the Cardinals’ record to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the division and allowed their coach to reach the career milestone in his 20th season as the team’s coach.

Leading only 24-22 midway through the third quarter, the Cardinals’ offense finally gained some traction as Tyler Hind scored six straight points — a floater in the lane, a pair of free throws and another layup on a feed from Andrew Bernard — to push the margin to 30-24.

Isaac Brown drilled a 3-pointer for the Warriors (10-8, 4-6) to get them back to within 30-25 with 2:24 remaining in the period, but that would be the last field goal for nearly 6¢ minutes. Meanwhile, Randolph’s Kaleb Steward opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and a layup, Ty Rosengren nailed a 3-pointer and Gabe McCoy scored on a putback to push the host’s lead to 44-25 lead with under five minutes to go in the game.

Steward paced the Cardinals with 8 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals; Hind had 11 points — nine in the second half — and four assists; and McCoy added 9 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.

Brown led Salamanca with 13 points, but the Warriors struggled from the field, connecting on only 12-of-55 attempts.

The Cardinals will be back in action today when they travel to Health Sciences for a nonleague game, which will be played at Villa Maria College. Opening tip is at 6 p.m. Salamanca will travel to Franklinville on Tuesday.
