The Jamestown YMCA youth boxing program is enjoying a promising start to the new year. Three members of the club, Davmond Carter, Tony Torres Jr. and Hector Folch, are currently preparing for upcoming fights.

Carter, a native of the Bronx, has scheduled his second career professional fight for March 2 in Pittsburgh after losing a majority decision in his first professional bout on Nov. 21 in Youngstown, Ohio.

On the advice of coaches Chip Swanson and Joe Ortiz, Carter will be dropping down to cruiserweight after entering the ring in Ohio as a heavyweight.

“We’ve talked about losing weight because he only weighs 212. In today’s heavyweight division that is awful light,” Swanson said of Carter on Tuesday evening.

“He’s going to fight now in Pittsburgh as a 201-pound fighter, a cruiserweight, so we’re going down a weight,” Swanson added. “He moves very well, good head movement, good ring awareness. He is light on his feet for a big guy, I’ve never seen a guy his size move like he does. He’s a good defensive fighter.”

Carter works as a certified nurse’s assistant and carries an amateur record of 91-4.

He has won national Silver Gloves titles on two separate occasions as well as a Golden Gloves Championship in addition to competing at the US Olympic trials in both 2012 and 2016.

“He has all the right skills. He can go a long way if he chooses too. It’s all about the training,” Swanson said.

Torres and Folch will be looking to continue their successful amateur careers at the Golden Gloves Championship on Sunday at Riverworks in Buffalo.

“It’s a yearly tournament that goes on nationwide. It’s one of the highest honors that an amateur can strive for in their career, and a lot of those champions become top professionals,” Swanson said of the Golden Gloves event.

Folch, an 18-year-old from Puerto Rico who was displaced by Hurricane Maria, will be fighting at 132 pounds while Torres, a Jamestown native, will be at 201 pounds.

Folch will be competing in the Open Division while Torres is moving up to the Novice Class and hoping to defend his championship from last year. Torres’ father, Tony Torres Sr., is also a boxing coach at the Jamestown YMCA.

Advanced tickets for the Golden Gloves Championship will be $25 for general admission, $35 for ringside and $45 for VIP, with prices increasing by $5 the day of the event. More information can be found at BuffaloGoldenGloves.com.

Swanson has coached with the YMCA for seven years after starting his boxing career in the early 1970s. For any interested parties, the YMCA boxing club holds classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. Please contact the YMCA for more information.
