‘Freakish’ Barmore Dominates For CSP

He’s not faster than a speeding bullet, but he’s certainly fast enough.

More powerful than a locomotive is probably an exaggeration, but he definitely puts in the work in the weight room.

And he can’t leap small buildings in a single bound, but he easily outjumps helpless defensive backs in a heartbeat.

It’s not a bird or a plane, it’s Cameron Barmore — Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Superman.

Barmore burst on the scene as a sophomore with his highlight-reel dunks that spread across Twitter last winter.

In the spring, the Panama 10th-grader won the Section VI Division II high jump title with a leap of 6 feet, 5 inches before finishing third in New York state at 6 feet, 4 inches.

But now the 6-foot, 4-inch Barmore is making a name for himself on the gridiron.

“He’s an aberration. It’s really something with his height — he’s strong, he blocks great, he can get off the ground, he catches the ball — he just does everything,” CSP defensive coordinator Chris Payne said following practice Wednesday inside Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex. “He’s a quiet kid who just gets his job done. … He’s pretty well-rounded.”

Entering the Wolfpack’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D championship game against Section VII Moriah at noon today at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, Barmore has caught 43 passes for 893 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“It started last year. He was a really good player last year and we knew over the summer that it was going to carry over into this year,” junior quarterback Gerrit Hinsdale said Wednesday. “He’s been balling out.”

Clymer/Sherman/Panama has gone 12-0, outscoring opponents 485-115 along the way, many times not giving its aerial attack a chance to put up big numbers because games are out of hand by halftime.

That hasn’t stopped Barmore and Hinsdale, who has completed 119 passes for 1,792 yards and 21 touchdowns against just six interceptions.

“It’s such an awesome connection. Being that they are both juniors, it’s going to make my life a lot easier,” CSP head coach Ty Harper said following practice Tuesday. ” … The chemistry that those two have built up over the course of the past two years is something that you can’t really replicate. … Cam would be the first one to give the credit to Gerrit.”

Thirty-six percent of Hinsdale’s completions, just under 50 percent of his yardage and more than half of his touchdowns have been to Barmore.

“We have a bond that no one can take,” Barmore said of he and Hinsdale. “That’s what we’ve wanted … for him to know where I am all the time and that he would have the trust that I could go up and get it.”

While Barmore has been blessed with size — he says the height comes from his mom’s side of the family — and athleticism — his dad Chris was a running back who played at the University at Buffalo — he also has the work ethic to make something of it.

“He is a hard worker. He’s a kid that shows up to every workout that we have in the offseason,” Harper said. “When we have a 7-on-7, he’s always there. … He’s constantly talking with Hinsdale about ways they can perfect their timing. … Having two kids who are willing to work as hard as they do it certainly paying dividends now.”

” … I’ve always been a competitor. If you work harder it pays off. That’s always what I’ve done,” Barmore added. “The height is just another attribute that helps a little bit, but you have to work hard and always win your one-on-ones.”

Barmore’s impact on the game isn’t just on the offensive side of the ball. A 6-foot-4 defensive back tends to make the opposition shy away from throwing the ball to his side of the field. He’s been in on 41 tackles, including two for a loss, and intercepted three passes this season.

“I was thinking about putting him at defensive end, but then I saw him during passing league and he was all over the place. … He’s just an athlete,” Payne said. ” … His best attribute is coming up on the runs. When he gets on you, he’s lockdown. His arms are so long, he just engulfs people. He’s a great force to have out there. A couple of games I followed their best receiver with Cam.”

Barmore caught touchdowns in three of the Wolfpack’s first four games of the season, including ripping a 50-50 ball away from a Cattaraugus-Little Valley defender during Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s 54-12 win back on Sept. 15.

“I’ve never coached an athlete like him. I think earlier in the year, maybe after the Cattaraugus-Little Valley game in Sherman, I think a word that I used was ‘freakish,'” Harper said. “He just does things that other kids physically cannot do. He does them all the time and he makes it look easy. It’s almost as though he doesn’t acknowledge that what he has done is incredible.”

During a Sept. 21 game that carried into Sept. 22 due to a weather delay, Barmore had four catches for 88 yards, including a 19-yard score in a 47-19 win at Salamanca.

“It doesn’t seem like it’s important now, but back in Week 4 against Salamanca there was a play where I got absolutely drilled and Cameron just made a huge adjustment on the ball,” Hinsdale said of the touchdown against the Warriors. “It was the best ball I’ve thrown all year and the best catch he’s made all year. He just powered over a couple of guys. It was a great play all around.”

After a two-week absence from the end zone, Barmore had his breakout game Oct. 13 against Salamanca when he had eight catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Barmore caught touchdowns of 7 and 9 yards in the second quarter before streaking down the sideline and catching a 36-yard score with one hand in the third quarter as the Wolfpack was on its way to a 40-0 shutout victory.

Barmore has also shined during the past three weeks as Clymer/Sherman/Panama played its most important games of the season. In the Section VI championship game, Barmore had five catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-7 win over Maple Grove.

“We tell Gerrit, it’s never a bad idea to throw it up to Cam,” Harper said. ” … When he’s throwing it in Cam’s direction, we usually feel pretty good about the outcome.”

In the Far West Regional, he had four catches for 62 yards and a score in a 29-6 win over Alexander.

“If I feel the pressure coming, I’m always looking toward Cam,” Hinsdale said. “I can trust Cameron. That all starts over the summer. It all starts with the chemistry. He’s been playing really well.”

And this past week, Barmore caught eight passes for a school-record 214 yards and two touchdowns in a 54-19 victory over Tioga.

“I’m really happy for him that he has been able to showcase some of that ability the past few weeks. He has been great for us the entire year whether it’s catching the ball, blocking or playing defense. He really can do it all. But I think the past three weeks have really been kind of a coming-out party for him as far as showcasing his athletic ability,” Harper said. “In the playoffs he has scored five touchdowns. He broke our program record for receiving yards in a game. He has also broke our program record this year for yards in a season and catches in a season. It’s nice for him to get some exposure at the state level.”

With Moriah winning its regional by a 6-0 score last Sunday, there’s a chance a state championship could come down to the final play.

That would be just fine with the Wolfpack.

“It’s good knowing that he can jump 6-5 and he can go up and get the ball,” Hinsdale said. “He’s just a big-time player. Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games.”

“If we’re going to need one play to make it happen, I think that would be a great option,” Payne added. ” … Going to him at the end of the game is a good call.”
